Ibuprofen: effect on inducible nitric oxide synthase

Molecular Brain Research, 1997
Treatment with ibuprofen and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) has been reported to decrease the incidence as well as slow down the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Understanding the mechanism of this therapeutic effect would provide a target for development of drugs which may be devoid of side effects observed with NSAIDs.

Inactivation of the Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase by Peroxynitrite

Chemical Research in Toxicology, 1997
The simultaneous production of superoxide and nitric oxide by stimulated human neutrophils leads to the formation of peroxynitrite, a physiologically important bactericidal agent. We have investigated two possible pathways for the inactivation of inducible nitric oxide synthase (NOS-II) by peroxynitrite: inactivation of NOS-II through oxidation of the ...

microRNA and Human Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase

2014
Regulation of human inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression involves both transcriptional and posttranscriptional mechanisms. Human iNOS gene transcription is controlled in a cell type-specific manner by extracellular cytokines. Transcriptional regulation of human iNOS gene involves transcription factors NF-κB, Stat-1, AP-1, C/EBPβ, KLF6, Oct

Antifibrotic Role of Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase

Nitric Oxide, 2002
Long-term treatment in rats with l-NAME, an isoform-non-specific inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), leads to fibrosis of the heart and kidney, suggesting that nitric oxide (NO) may play a role in preventing tissue fibrosis. In this process, a likely target of NO is the quenching of reactive oxygen species (ROS) through peroxynitrite formation ...

mRNA Expressions of Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase, Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase, and Neuronal Nitric Oxide Synthase Genes in Meningitis Patients

Genetic Testing and Molecular Biomarkers, 2011
Meningitis is an inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses with various clinical symptoms. Although meningitis is not so prevalent, it remains the most serious contagious disease. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of gene expressions of nitric oxide synthases (NOS)

Roles of Neuronal Nitric Oxide Synthase and Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase in Intestinal Transplantation of Rats

Transplantation Proceedings, 2013
The study was designed to evaluate the role of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) and acute rejection (AR) in rat intestinal transplantation, by administration of nitric oxide inhibitor N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (LNAME).Rats that underwent orthotopic intestinal ...

Implication of nitric oxide synthase in carcinogenesis: analysis of the human inducible nitric oxide synthase gene

Pharmacogenetics, 1995
Nitric oxide (NO) is a newly identified, multifunctional biological mediator. However, it also has deleterious effects on biological materials. For instance, nucleic acids, proteins, and some prosthetic groups of enzymes can be modified by NO or its reaction products with other reactive oxygen species.

Porphyromonas gingivalisstimulates the release of nitric oxide by inducing expression of inducible nitric oxide synthases and inhibiting endothelial nitric oxide synthases

Journal of Periodontal Research, 2010
The purpose of this study was to examine the ability of Porphyromonas gingivalis to invade human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and to study the effects of P. gingivalis ATCC 33277 on the production of nitric oxide (NO) and on the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in HUVECs.
