In vivo Probabilistic Structural Atlas of the Inferior and Superior Colliculi, Medial and Lateral Geniculate Nuclei and Superior Olivary Complex in Humans Based on 7 Tesla MRI [PDF]

open access: goldFrontiers in Neuroscience, 2019
Despite extensive neuroimaging research of primary sensory cortices involved in auditory and visual functions, subcortical structures within these domains, such as the inferior and superior colliculi, the medial and lateral geniculate nuclei and the ...

A case of Wernicke encephalopathy with hypoacusia and MR high intensity of the inferior colliculi that normalized after thiamine administration

open access: bronzeRinsho Shinkeigaku, 2018
A 61-year-old man was admitted to our institution with progressive hypoacusia, double vision, and lightheadedness. Neurological examination on day 6 of his illness showed severe hypoacusia, mild confusion, ocular motility disorder, truncal ataxia and absence of a deep tendon reflex.

The Ventral Tectal Longitudinal Column: A Midbrain Nucleus for Modulation of Auditory Processing in the Cochlear Nucleus, Superior Olivary Complex, and Inferior Colliculus. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Comp Neurol
The ventral tectal longitudinal column (TLCv) is a midbrain nucleus thought to provide multisensory modulation of acoustic processing via descending projections to the superior olivary complex. We discovered additional projections from the TLCv to the cochlear nucleus and to the inferior colliculus.

Corticobasal degeneration preceded by cognitive impairment and apathy: An autopsy case report. [PDF]

open access: yesPCN Rep
Abstract Background Corticobasal degeneration (CBD) presents with a range of clinical phenotypes, making diagnosis challenging. We report the clinical course of a patient with autopsy‐confirmed CBD who initially presented with cognitive impairment and apathy, without motor symptoms.

Rare case of metronidazole-induced encephalopathy in a multiple transplant recipient: Clinical and radiological insights. [PDF]

open access: yesClin Case Rep
Key Clinical Message Metronidazole‐induced encephalopathy (MIE) is a rare but reversible condition that can present with nonspecific neurological symptoms, making early recognition and diagnosis challenging. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is crucial in identifying typical brain lesions associated with MIE.

The Brain of the African Wild Dog. V. The Somatosensory System and Vestibular Nuclear Complex. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Comp Neurol
Lateral view of the African wild dog brain showing the location of the somatosensory cortical areas in relation to the parietal multisensory region (PP), occipital visual cortical areas (17, 18, 19, 21, SS, T), and temporal auditory cortical areas (AAF, AI AII).

The Inferior Colliculus in Alcoholism and Beyond

open access: yesFrontiers in Systems Neuroscience, 2020
Post-mortem neuropathological and in vivo neuroimaging methods have demonstrated the vulnerability of the inferior colliculus to the sequelae of thiamine deficiency as occurs in Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome (WKS).
