Prostanoids and inflammatory pain
Prostaglandins & Other Lipid Mediators, 2013Prostanoids play pivotal roles in inflammation and pain. Cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitors, the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), depress prostanoid formation and are widely used to treat inflammatory pain. However, their therapeutic benefit is offset by serious side-effects, primarily gastrointestinal and cardiovascular complications ...

Traditionally, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been advocated for inflammatory pain. Studies in arthritic rats have shown that inflammatory pain is more sensitive to opioids than other types of nociceptive pain.

Hyperalgesia, an excessive sensitivity to pain, has been attributed exclusively to a sensitization of peripheral nociceptors. However, changes in the central processing of painful stimuli, particularly in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord, also play an important role. Harvey et al. (see the news story by Marx) show

Inflammatory back pain (IBP) refers to a collection of symptoms that may help identify patients with possible inflammatory spinal disease. A number of criteria sets have been proposed for IBP, which share common features such as: onset of symptoms aged <40 years, alternating buttock pain, improvement with exercise, worsening with rest, gradual onset,

Inflammatory pain: kinins and antagonists
Current Opinion in Anaesthesiology, 2001This short review focuses on the most recent findings in the rapidly expanding field of kinin research. Through a series of recent publications, the crucial relevance of this group of peptides as mediators of inflammatory pain is becoming increasingly evident.

Local control of inflammatory pain
Agents and Actions, 1981The mechanism of the local hyperalgesic action of prostaglandin E2 has been studied using rat paw oedema. Prostaglandin E2 is a metabotropic transmitter, activating adenylate cyclase, either directly or through the release of a stimulatory protein factor. This activation of adenylate-cyclase is blocked, locally, by opiates.

Optogenetic Neuromodulation in Inflammatory Pain
NeuroscienceInflammatory pain is one of the most prevalent forms of pain and negatively influences the quality of life. Neuromodulation has been an expanding field of pain medicine and is accepted by patients who have failed to respond to several conservative treatments.

Mechanisms of Inflammatory Pain
JCR: Journal of Clinical Rheumatology, 2004The study and treatment of clinical pain has historically identified particular pain syndromes and linked their etiology with disease factors. Missing in this approach is consideration of the mechanisms accounting for the pain that is experienced by the patient.

In patients with lumbar pain, we must investigate the rhythm of the pain and other associated aspects that may be alarm signals of a specific or even sinister underlying pathology (Chapter 11).

Electrophysiological Mechanisms in Inflammatory Pain
1991Inflammatory pain is mediated from the periphery by a specialized subgroup of nerve fibers, the nociceptors. The nociceptive nerve endings undergo sensitization and excitation when stimulated with inflammatory agents. It will be shown that a multitude of substances cooperates in this process.
