The value of noise for informational cascades
2014 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory, 2014Informational cascades are said to occur when rational agents ignore their own private information and blindly follow the actions of other agents. Models for such cascades have been well studied for Bayesian agents, who observe perfectly the actions of other agents.

Optimum information in crackling noise
Physical Review E, 2005The crackling noise due to scratching superhard nanocomposite coatings was investigated by using a simple stick-slip model. The optimum information extracted from statistical analysis, in terms of the Akaike information criterion, is in good agreement with real tests.

Proceedings of the second workshop on Analytics for noisy unstructured text data, 2008
In this extended abstract I examine the notion of noise and its application to Information Retrieval and urge the reader to consider noise as an intrinsic property of information, not merely a problem to be eliminated.

Thermal Noise and Biological Information
The Quarterly Review of Biology, 1987Thermal noise limits the efficiency of all information-handling systems. This principle, which is a routine consideration in electronics, is just as fundamental to the handling of highly specific information by living organisms. The rapid basal turnover rates of cells and intracellular proteins and the high energy consumption of regulatory organs ...

INFORMATION AND NOISE IN THE NEURONAL CIRCUITRY
Kybernetes, 1983The informative capacity of a neuronal line is limited by the bandwidth and the noise of the cell mechanisms. We specify the nature of these phenomena and we estimate their magnitude. They explain many of the anatomical and physiological properties of sensorial and muscular circuits.

Image noise-informative map for noise standard deviation estimation
2011 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP), 2011The problem of automatic detection of image areas that can be reliably selected for accurate estimation of additive noise standard deviation (STD), irrespectively to processed image properties, is considered in this paper. For getting accurate estimate of either texture or noise parameters involved, we distinguish two complementary image informative ...

Information, Cryptography, and Noise
2023Abstract Chapter 12 focuses on Claude Shannon’s treatment of noise in his information theory in the contexts of wartime and postwar research on command, control, communication, and computing at Bell Labs. Shannon’s fundamental principle—the so-called “channel coding theorem” that stipulated the optimum rate of information transmission ...

Noise and information in interferometric cross correlators
Applied Optics, 1997We consider optical interferometric cross correlators based on broadband light sources. We derive the signal-to-noise ratio from basic principles and supply experimental evidence that corroborates the theoretical analysis. Noise sources are discussed, and the signal-to-noise ratio of our experimental system is measured.
