Parameterization of the inherent optical properties of Murchison Bay, Lake Victoria
Applied Optics, 2007Lake Victoria, Africa's largest freshwater lake, suffers greatly from negative changes in biomass of species of fish and also from severe eutrophication. The continuing deterioration of Lake Victoria's ecological functions has great long-term consequences for the ecosystem benefits it provides to the countries bordering its shores.

Effects of The Inherent Optical Properties On Remotely Sensed Reflectance
2002Abstract : The long-term goals of this project are to determine how the inherent optical properties and their vertical distribution affect remote sensing. This work includes using two-flow and full radiative transfer models to evaluate the conditions under which subsurface optical structure is detectable, and to develop an inversion model to determine ...

Uniqueness in remote sensing of the inherent optical properties of ocean water
Applied Optics, 2004We examine the problem of uniqueness in the relationship between the remote-sensing reflectance (Rrs) and the inherent optical properties (IOPs) of ocean water. The results point to the fact that diffuse reflectance of plane irradiance from ocean water is inherently ambiguous. Furthermore, in the 400 < lambda < 750 nm region of the spectrum, Rrs(lambda)

In situ methods for measuring the inherent optical properties of ocean waters
Limnology and Oceanography, 1995In situ attenuation (488 and 660 nm), absorption (488, 676, and 750 nm), backscattering (at 488 nm), and stimulated fluorescence were determined as functions of depth in oceanic and coastal waters off Oregon, using both commercial instruments and recently developed prototypes.

Determination of inherent optical properties of Lake Ontario coastal waters
Applied Optics, 1979Two optical models (one based upon Monte Carlo simulations of the solutions of the radiative transfer equations and one based upon exponential/quasi-single scattering simulations) relating the apparent and inherent optical properties of natural water masses are utilized in conjunction with directly measured values of the irradiance attenuation ...

Airborne LIDAR as a tool for estimating inherent optical properties
SPIE Proceedings, 2012LIght Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) systems have been used most extensively to generate elevation maps of land, ice and coastal bathymetry. There has been space-, airborne- and land-based LIDAR systems. They have also been used in underwater communication.

Toward closure of the inherent optical properties of natural waters
Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 1995A fundamental relationship of inherent optical properties (IOP) is that the beam attenuation coefficient is the sum of the volume absorption and scattering coefficients (c = a + b). A relative calibration of a set of instruments can be provided using this IOP closure equation.

Estimation of inherent optical properties from CZMIL lidar
SPIE Proceedings, 2014Bathymetric lidar has been widely used for ocean floor mapping. By identifying two distinctive return peaks, one from the water surface and the other from the bottom, the water depth can be estimated. In addition to bathymetry, it is also possible to estimate the optical properties of the water by analyzing the lidar return waveform.

Studies on some of the inherent optical properties of natural waters [Invited]
Applied Optics, 2013The author's experimental activities in ocean optics that are related to the inherent optical properties of natural waters are discussed. The specific subjects discussed are (1) measurements of Mueller matrices for several ocean water regions; (2) measurements of the spectral absorption of pure water throughout the visible spectrum; (3) the development

Characterization and Modeling of Inherent Optical Properties in the Gulf of Maine
2001Abstract : Our long term goal is to contribute to a fundamental understanding of the sources of biological, physical, and optical variability in coastal ocean systems. Particular focus is on applications useful for studying important ecological processes and the links between phytoplankton properties and physical processes in coastal regions.
