Hydroxyurea: Inhibitory Effect on DNA Metabolism

Hydroxyurea, hydroxyurethane, and dihydroxyurea inhibit incorporation of thymidine into the DNA of monolayers of HeLa cells. They do not affect incorporation of uridine into RNA or of leucine into protein. In contrast, hydroxylamine inhibits cellular incorporation of all three precursors: thymidine, uridine, and leucine.

Human lymphocytes treated in vitro with Mercurascan (MSC) have a reduced capacity to form E rosettes and to respond to phytohemagglutinin. This study describes the hypotensive, cardiosuppressant and vasodilator activities of Hyoscyamus niger crude extract (Hn.Cr). The multiplication of the alga Scenedesmus quadricauda is inhibited by Amitrole (3‐amino‐1,2,4‐triazole). This inhibition is reversed by addition of adenine to the growth medium. An electron‐microscopic study has been made of the cytological changes which accompany the inhibition by Amitrole and the subsequent reversal.
