Biological Inspiration for Artificial Immune Systems [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the 6th International Conference on Artificial Immune Systems (ICARIS2007), Lecture Notes in Computer Science 4628, Santos, Brazil, 2010
Artificial immune systems (AISs) to date have generally been inspired by naive biological metaphors. This has limited the effectiveness of these systems. In this position paper two ways in which AISs could be made more biologically realistic are discussed.

PHLPP1 counter-regulates STAT1-mediated inflammatory signaling. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Inflammation is an essential aspect of innate immunity but also contributes to diverse human diseases. Although much is known about the kinases that control inflammatory signaling, less is known about the opposing phosphatases.

Early metastasis is characterized by Gr1+ cell dysregulation and is inhibited by immunomodulatory nanoparticles

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Breast cancer metastasis is associated with myeloid cell dysregulation and the lung‐specific accumulation of tumor‐supportive Gr1+ cells. Gr1+ cells support metastasis, in part, through a CHI3L1‐mediated mechanism, which can be targeted and inhibited with cargo‐free, polymeric nanoparticles.

Introducing Dendritic Cells as a Novel Immune-Inspired Algorithm for Anomoly Detection [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the 4th International Conference on Artificial Immune Systems (ICARIS2005), Lecture Notes in Computer Science 3627, Banff, Canada, 2005, 2010
Dendritic cells are antigen presenting cells that provide a vital link between the innate and adaptive immune system. Research into this family of cells has revealed that they perform the role of coordinating T-cell based immune responses, both reactive and for generating tolerance. We have derived an algorithm based on the functionality of these cells,

Neutrophils in Innate Immunity

open access: yesSeminars in Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 2004
Neutrophils are an important component of innate immunity in the lungs. During bacterial pneumonia, neutrophils are recruited from the capillaries of the pulmonary circulation in the gas-exchanging regions of the lungs. This process requires the coordinated activation of many cells within the lungs, including neutrophils and capillary endothelial cells.

Cyclic Nucleotide-Specific Optogenetics Highlights Compartmentalization of the Sperm Flagellum into cAMP Microdomains

open access: yesCells, 2019
Inside the female genital tract, mammalian sperm undergo a maturation process called capacitation, which primes the sperm to navigate across the oviduct and fertilize the egg.

Immuno-inspired robotic applications: a review [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2012
Artificial immune systems primarily mimic the adaptive nature of biological immune functions. Their ability to adapt to varying pathogens makes such systems a suitable choice for various robotic applications. Generally, AIS-based robotic applications map local instantaneous sensory information into either an antigen or a co-stimulatory signal ...

Understanding and measuring mechanical signals in the tumor stroma

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This review discusses cancer‐associated fibroblast subtypes and their functions, particularly in relation to extracellular matrix production, as well as the development of 3D models to study tumor stroma mechanics in vitro. Several quantitative techniques to measure tissue mechanical properties are also described, to emphasize the diagnostic and ...
