Trophic Transfer of Arsenic from an Aquatic Insect to Terrestrial Insect Predators. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The movement of energy and nutrients from aquatic to terrestrial ecosystems can be substantial, and emergent aquatic insects can serve as biovectors not only for nutrients, but also for contaminants present in the aquatic environment.

High‐Chroma, High‐Contrast Tunable Color Coatings Using Sb2S3 in a Metal‐Dielectric Stack

open access: yesAdvanced Photonics Research, EarlyView.
A novel tunable color coating design is presented, using the phase‐change material Sb2S3 in a Fabry–Perot cavity. The resulting coatings yield bright, attractive colors, and display a significant color change when annealed using a hotplate or a laser. This demonstrates that Sb2S3 is a promising candidate for use in tunable color coatings.

Physiological adaptations to sugar‐mimic alkaloids: Insights from Bombyx mori for long‐term adaption and short‐term response

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2020
Insects evolved adaptive plasticity to minimize the effects of the chemical defenses of their host plants. Nevertheless, the expressional response and adaptation of phytophagous specialists for long‐term adaption and short‐term response to host ...

The Insect Pathogens

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum, 2017
ABSTRACTFungi are the most common disease-causing agents of insects; aside from playing a crucial role in natural ecosystems, insect-killing fungi are being used as alternatives to chemical insecticides and as resources for biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.

Unearthing Lactococcus lactis and Scheffersomyeces symbionts from edible wood-boring beetle larvae as a bio-resource for industrial applications

open access: yesBMC Microbiology
Background Gut microbiota have several advantages in influencing the host nutrition, metabolism, immunity and growth. However, the understanding of the gut microbiota in key edible wood-boring beetle larvae remain largely undefined. In the present study,

Rhythmic oscillations of α-amylase protein and its enzymatic activity levels in Drosophila melanogaster (Diptera: Drosophilidae)

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology, 2009
In this report, we show that α-amylase activity is rhythmic in the wild-type fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, and that this rhythm exhibits the properties of a clock output. Moreover, the rhythm of amylase activity is accompanied by fluctuations in the
