Tangling clustering instability for small particles in temperature stratified turbulence

open access: yes, 2013
We study particle clustering in a temperature stratified turbulence with small finite correlation time. It is shown that the temperature stratified turbulence strongly increases the degree of compressibility of particle velocity field.

Energy dynamics in a simulation of LAPD turbulence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Energy dynamics calculations in a 3D fluid simulation of drift wave turbulence in the linear Large Plasma Device (LAPD) [W. Gekelman et al., Rev. Sci. Inst. 62, 2875 (1991)] illuminate processes that drive and dissipate the turbulence. These calculations

The curse of instability

open access: yesComplexity, 2015
High-dimensional computational challenges are frequently explained via the curse of dimensionality, i.e., increasing the number of dimensions leads to exponentially growing computational complexity. In this commentary, we argue that thinking on a different level helps to understand, why we face the curse of dimensionality.

On the wrong DNA track: Molecular mechanisms of repeat-mediated genome instability

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 2020
Expansions of simple tandem repeats are responsible for almost 50 human diseases, the majority of which are severe, degenerative, and not currently treatable or preventable.

Decoding the dual role of autophagy in cancer through transcriptional and epigenetic regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Transcriptional and epigenetic regulation controls autophagy, which exerts context‐dependent effects on cancer: Autophagy suppresses tumorigenesis by maintaining cellular homeostasis or promotes tumor progression by supporting survival under stress. In this “In a Nutshell” article, we explore the intricate mechanisms of the dual function of autophagy ...

Autophagy in cancer and protein conformational disorders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Autophagy plays a crucial role in numerous biological processes, including protein and organelle quality control, development, immunity, and metabolism. Hence, dysregulation or mutations in autophagy‐related genes have been implicated in a wide range of human diseases.

Vaccines against candidiasis: Status, challenges and emerging opportunity

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2022
Candidiasis is a mycosis caused by opportunistic Candida species. The occurrence of fungal infections has considerably increased in the last few years primarily due to an increase in the number of immune-suppressed individuals.

Orientation dependence of the elastic instability on strained SiGe films

open access: yes, 2010
At low strain, SiGe films on Si substrates undergo a continuous nucleationless morphological evolution known as the Asaro-Tiller-Grinfeld instability. We demonstrate experimentally that this instability develops on Si(001) but not on Si(111) even after ...

Novel Cauchy-horizon instability [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The evolution of weak discontinuity is investigated on horizons in the $n$-dimensional static solutions in the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar-$\Lambda$ system, including the Reissner-Nordstr\"om-(anti) de Sitter black hole. The analysis is essentially local and
