Instabilities and Solitons in Minimal Strips [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2016
We show that highly twisted minimal strips can undergo a nonsingular transition, unlike the singular transitions seen in the Möbius strip and the catenoid. If the strip is nonorientable, this transition is topologically frustrated, and the resulting surface contains a helicoidal defect.

Gaia-derived luminosities ofKeplerA/F stars and the pulsator fraction across the δ Scuti instability strip [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2019
We study the fraction of stars in and around the {\delta} Scuti instability strip that are pulsating, using {\em Gaia} DR2 parallaxes to derive precise luminosities. We classify a sample of over 15,000 {\em Kepler} A and F stars into {\delta} Sct and non-

Erratum: Candidates for non-pulsating stars located in the Cepheid instability strip in the Large Magellanic Cloud based on Strömgren photometry [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2019
We present candidates for non-pulsating stars lying in the classical Cepheid instability strip based on the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) photometric maps combined with Strömgren photometry obtained with the 4.1-m Southern ...

A Theoretical γ Doradus Instability Strip

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2003
In this paper, we present the first theoretical γ Doradus instability strip. We find that our model instability strip agrees very well with the previously established, observationally based, instability strip of Handler & Shobbrook. We stress, as do Guzik et al., that the convection zone depth plays the major role in the determination of our ...

A New Instability Strip for Hot Degenerates [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Astronomical Union Colloquium, 1980
A completely new kind of variable star has recently been discovered (McGraw, et. al. 1979). Designated as PG1159-035 (hereafter PG) this star is distinguished not only by the complete lack of hydrogen in its spectrum but also by an effective temperature that exceeds 8 × 104 K (McGraw, private communication).

Instability Condition Derivation for Hydraulic AGC System under Pressure Closed-Loop Control

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2021
In strip rolling, hydraulic automatic gauge control (HAGC) system is the key element to guarantee the precision of strip gauge. The stability of the kernel pressure closed loop (PCL) in the HAGC system plays an essential role in guaranteeing the rolling ...

Homing in on Polaris: A 7 M⊙ first-overtone Cepheid entering the instability strip for the first time [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
A recently presented HST/FGS parallax measurement of the Polaris system has been interpreted as evidence for the Cepheid Polaris Aa to be pulsating in the second overtone.

Synthetic Nonlinear RR Lyrae Instability Strips [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Astronomical Union Colloquium, 2002
AbstractA recently recognized problem is revisited, namely the discrepancy between the structure of the theoretical and the empirical, observationally derived RR Lyrae instability strips. The essence of the discrepancy is that the slope of the empirical fundamental-mode blue edge is much less steep than its theoretical counterpart.

High-resolution spectroscopy and abundance analysis of δ Scuti stars near the γ Doradus instability strip [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
$\delta$ Scuti stars are remarkable objects for asteroseismology. In spite of decades of investigations, there are still important questions about these pulsating stars to be answered, such as their positions in $\log$$T_{\rm eff}$ $-$ $\log g$ diagram ...

Stability Analysis of Box Tunnel Working Face under Non-Uniform Support Pressure

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2023
For rectangular section tunnel construction, soil bin pressure fluctuates under biaxial emergence conditions. Support pressure is difficult to uniformly distribute, and it can easily cause instability of the tunneling face.
