Microbial Odorant Detection Guides Drosophila Parasitoids Seeking Hosts in Fermenting Fruits

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Yeast microbes in fermenting fruits attract both host flies and their parasitoid wasps. Female Leptopilina boulardi detect yeast‐emitted ethyl esters via two olfactory receptors, LbouOR167 and LbouOR136. A conserved residue, Leu159, is critical for binding these compounds, enabling female wasps to locate host‐rich habitats.

Titin Is Present in the Elastic Tethers That Connect Separating Anaphase Chromosomes in Crane‐Fly Spermatocytes

open access: yesCytoskeleton, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Elastic tethers connect telomeres of separating chromosomes in anaphase of animal cells. Immunofluorescence staining of titin in crane‐fly spermatocytes, using 4 different antibodies, shows that the giant elastic protein titin seems to be a component of mitotic tethers: titin “strands” extend between separating chromosomes, connecting their ...

Graphania mutans (Walker) and Acremonium lolii (Latch) : the relationship between an insect herbivore and a fungal endophyte of perennial ryegrass : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Zoology at Massey University [PDF]

open access: yes, 1987
In examining the relationship between Graphania mutans (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and perennial ryegrass infected with the fungal endophyte Acremonium lolii (Latch in press), the biology of G. mutans was investigated.

Pss knockdown in the midgut causes growth retardation in Drosophila similar to that in human LMHD

open access: yesDevelopmental Dynamics, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Phosphatidylserine synthase (PSS), localized in the mitochondrial membrane, synthesizes phosphatidylserine. In humans, mutations in Pss lead to Lenz–Majewski hyperostotic dwarfism, a disorder affecting growth and development. The effects of Pss mutations on the growth of Drosophila melanogaster are not fully known. Hence, this study

A Quantitative Analysis of Growth and Size Regulation in Manduca sexta: The Physiological Basis of Variation in Size and Age at Metamorphosis. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Body size and development time are important life history traits because they are often highly correlated with fitness. Although the developmental mechanisms that control growth have been well studied, the mechanisms that control how a species ...

Foodplant Processing Adaptations in Four \u3ci\u3eHyalophora\u3c/i\u3e Species (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae): Regional and Taxonomic Specialization [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
To determine whether local populations of four Hyalophora species (Lepidoptera: Satumiidae) had improved survival or were physiologically adapted for rapid and/or efficient growth on their local hosts, a series of larval feeding studies were conducted ...

Robinow syndrome DVL1 variants disrupt morphogenesis and appendage formation in a Drosophila disease model

open access: yesDevelopmental Dynamics, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Robinow syndrome is a rare developmental syndrome caused by variants in genes in Wnt signaling pathways. We previously showed that expression of patient variants in Dishevelled 1 (DVL1) in Drosophila and chicken models disrupts the balance of canonical and non‐canonical Wnt signaling.

Pvr expression regulators in equilibrium signal control and maintenance of Drosophila blood progenitors. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Blood progenitors within the lymph gland, a larval organ that supports hematopoiesis in Drosophila melanogaster, are maintained by integrating signals emanating from niche-like cells and those from differentiating blood cells.

Insect‐resistant soybean genotypes accumulate rutin and its O‐methylated derivative narcissin, a more potent flavonol targeting Anticarsia gemmatalis digestive and detoxification enzymes and reducing larval survival

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract BACKGROUND Soybean underpins Brazil's agricultural, yet its sustainability is threatened by lepidopteran pests such as Anticarsia gemmatalis. Although insect‐resistant cultivars have long been associated with the constitutive accumulation of quercetin‐derived flavonols, the biochemical mechanisms underlying this resistance remain poorly ...
