Chitosan‐protected dsRNA increases efficacy against Helicoverpa armigera without compromising biosafety for pollinators

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Chitosan/tripolyphosphate/double‐stranded RNA (dsRNA) nanoparticles enhance RNA interference efficacy of orally delivered dsRNA against Helicoverpa armigera. Nanoparticles reduce the LC50 and do not cause deleterious effects or toxicity on beneficial insects.

Determination of female-biased sexual size dimorphism in moths with a variable instar number: The role of additional instars

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology, 2006
While the ultimate causes and adaptive significance of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) have been extensively studied, the developmental mechanisms behind this phenomenon have received little attention.

Intrinsic competition and its effects on the survival and development of three species of endoparasitoid wasps

open access: yes, 2009
In natural systems, pre-adult stages of some insect herbivores are known to be attacked by several species of parasitoids. Under certain conditions, hosts may be simultaneously parasitized by more than one parasitoid species (= multiparasitism), even ...

Leaf penetration by endophytic Metarhizium brunneum enables infection of Phthorimaea absoluta in tomato mines while inducing the crop defense system

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Spraying Metarhizium brunneum on tomato plants controls heterogeneous and upcoming Phthorimaea absoluta populations by infecting larvae within mines and priming plant induced systemic defences. Abstract BACKGROUND The endophytic entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium brunneum Petch EAMa 01/58‐Su shows strong potential for managing Phthorimaea absoluta, a ...

Life table studies of Trilocha virescence (Bombycidae: lepidoptera) on Ficus nitida [PDF]

open access: yesAsian Journal of Agriculture and Biology, 2013
The life table of Trilocha virescence was constructed in the laboratory which is a serious Lepidopterous pest of Ficus nitida. The study declared different impact of larval and adult mortality on the population.

LARVAL DEVELOPMENT OF PAGURUS LONGICARPUS SAY REARED IN THE LABORATORY, I. DESCRIPTION OF LARVAL INSTARS

open access: yesThe Biological Bulletin, 1970
Thompson (1903) described from the plankton four zoeae and a megalopa which he ascribed to Pagurus longicarpus. Although his verbal description of the external anatomy is incomplete, his figures are adequate to identify accurately the species with which he was working. His description of the internal anatomy is the most complete study available for any

HvarAKR1B1‐mediated tolerance in Hippodamia variegata: Deciphering the metabolic adaptation and fitness costs under prolonged starvation

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Starvation stress significantly affected the growth and development of Hippodamia variegata. Combined transcriptome and metabolome analysis and RNA interference verification revealed that HvarAKR1B1 may be involved in the response of Hippodamia variegata to starvation stress.

Evaluating astigmatid mites as supplemental food for Macrolophus pygmaeus: contrasting responses between commercial and wild populations

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Astigmatid mites provide low‐cost supplemental food for Macrolophus pygmaeus, supporting survival and development, with population‐specific responses and Acarus siro and Carpoglyphus lactis as the most promising alternatives. Abstract BACKGROUND Early establishment of Macrolophus pygmaeus in crops depends on the availability of supplemental food ...

Larval instar determination of the pea and bean weevil Sitona lineatus L. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

open access: yes, 1984
Head-capsule measurements on larvae of Sitona lineatus (L.) collected on beans (Vicia faba) in southern England in 1980 showed that there were 5 larval instars.
