Harmonic Generation in Metal-Insulator and Metal-Insulator-Metal Nanostructures

open access: yes, 2018
We report that the second and third harmonic signal reductions with insulator film surface coverage over a gold substrate gives a measure of the electron density in the spill out volume of the insulator, which is dubbed metal insulator gap states.

Icing Degree Characterization of Insulators Based on the Equivalent Collision Coefficient of Standard Rotating Conductors

open access: yesEnergies, 2018
Due to the complex structure of insulators, it is difficult to use parameters such as icicle length or ice thickness of an insulator to directly characterize the degree of icing of an insulator.

The insulator uncovered

open access: yesNature, 2001
Microscopes that reveal the structures of surfaces one atom at a time are good at imaging conductors but perform poorly with insulators. That may be about to change.

Spin pumping in ferromagnet-topological insulator-ferromagnetheterostructures

open access: yes, 2015
Topological insulators (TIs) are enticing prospects for the future of spintronics due to their large spin-orbit coupling and dissipationless, counter-propagating conduction channels in the surface state.

Network divergence analysis identifies adaptive gene modules and two orthogonal vulnerability axes in pancreatic cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumors contain diverse cellular states whose behavior is shaped by context‐dependent gene coordination. By comparing gene–gene relationships across biological contexts, we identify adaptive transcriptional modules that reorganize into distinct vulnerability axes.

Transcription Independent Insulation at TFIIIC-Dependent Insulators [PDF]

open access: yesGenetics, 2009
Abstract Chromatin insulators separate active from repressed chromatin domains. In yeast the RNA pol III transcription machinery bound to tRNA genes function with histone acetylases and chromatin remodelers to restrict the spread of heterochromatin.

C2α‐carbanion‐protonating glutamate discloses tradeoffs between substrate accommodation and reaction rate in actinobacterial 2‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA lyase

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Enzymes of the 2‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA lyase group catalyze the condensation of formyl‐CoA with aldehydes or ketones. Thus, by structural adaptation of active sites, practically any pharmaceutically and industrially important 2‐hydroxyacid could be biotechnologically synthesized. Combining crystal structure analysis, active site mutations and kinetic assays,

Electrical and magnetic properties of n-Cd(_1-x)Mn(_x) Te close to the metal-insulator transition [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Electrical transport and magnetic measurements have been made on n-Cd(_1-x)Mn(_x) Te (0.047 50 mT) Efros-Shklovskii variable range hopping is observed in the insulating phase.
