The role and implications of mammalian cellular circadian entrainment

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
At their most fundamental level, mammalian circadian rhythms occur inside every individual cell. To tell the correct time, cells must align (or ‘entrain’) their circadian rhythm to the external environment. In this review, we highlight how cells entrain to the major circadian cues of light, feeding and temperature, and the implications this has for our

Metabolic syndrome influences cardiac gene expression pattern at the transcript level in male ZDF rats [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Background: Metabolic syndrome (coexisting visceral obesity, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, and hypertension) is a prominent risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, however, its effect on cardiac gene expression pattern is unclear ...

Conserved structural motifs in PAS, LOV, and CRY proteins regulate circadian rhythms and are therapeutic targets

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cryptochrome and PAS/LOV proteins play intricate roles in circadian clocks where they act as both sensors and mediators of protein–protein interactions. Their ubiquitous presence in signaling networks has positioned them as targets for small‐molecule therapeutics. This review provides a structural introduction to these protein families.

Evaluation of Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 and Insulin-like Growth Factor Binding Protein-3 Expression Levels in Patients with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia

open access: yesTurkish Journal of Hematology, 2016
Objective: Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a disease of nonproliferating and mature-appearing B lymphocytes. Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) is a small peptide hormone and has mitogenic and antiapoptotic effects, and insulin-like growth ...

Association of Growth Velocity with Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 and Insulin-Like Growth Factor Binding Protein-3 Levels in Children with a Vegan Diet

open access: yesJournal of Biomedicine and Translational Research, 2020
Background: The vegan diet in children provides the benefit of reducing the risk of being overweight and improving the fat profile. The risk that can occur in the provision of a vegan diet in children is anthropometric size below reference and low ...

Insulin-like Growth Factor-binding Protein-3 Modulates Expression of Bax and Bcl-2 and Potentiates p53-independent Radiation-induced Apoptosis in Human Breast Cancer Cells*

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 2000
We report that transfection of insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) cDNA in human breast cancer cell lines expressing either mutant p53 (T47D) or wild-type p53 (MCF-7) induces apoptosis. IGFBP-3 also increases the ratio of pro-apoptotic

Differential interactions between IGFBP-3 and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) in normal vs cancerous breast epithelial cells [PDF]

open access: yes
In addition to modulating insulin-like growth factors action, it is now clear that insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-3 also has intrinsic effects on cell growth and survival.

Characterization of Mouse Tissue Kallikrein 5 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Mouse tissue kallikreins (Klks) are members of a large, multigene family consisting of 37 genes, 26 of which can code for functional proteins. Mouse tissue kallikrein 5 (KIk5) has long been thought to be one of these functional genes, but the gene ...
