Enhancing algal growth and nutrient recovery from anaerobic digestion piggery effluent by an integrated pretreatment strategy of ammonia stripping and flocculation

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, 2023
Anaerobic digestion piggery effluent (ADPE) with a quite high ammonium (NH4+) concentration and turbidity (dark brown color) generally requires high dilution before microalgae cultivation, owing to its NH4+ toxicity and color inhibition to algal growth ...

Potential for energy savings by heat recovery in an integrated steel supply chain [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Heat recovery plays an important role in energy saving in the supply chain of steel products. Almost all high temperature outputs in the steel industry have their thermal energy exchanged to preheat inputs to the process.

Time after time – circadian clocks through the lens of oscillator theory

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Oscillator theory bridges physics and circadian biology. Damped oscillators require external drivers, while limit cycles emerge from delayed feedback and nonlinearities. Coupling enables tissue‐level coherence, and entrainment aligns internal clocks with environmental cues.

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Water Recovery from Laundry Wastewater by Integrated Purification Systems

open access: yesMembranes
Integrated systems for water recovery from laundry wastewater were investigated to close the water cycle loop. The grey water from the washing cycle of cotton fabrics with a softening detergent was prefiltered, purified in a low-pressure membrane process,

Spacecraft oxygen recovery system [PDF]

open access: yes, 1974
Recovery system is comprised of three integrated subsystems: electrochemical carbon dioxide concentrator which removes carbon dioxide from atmosphere, Sabatier reactor in which carbon dioxide is reduced with hydrogen to form methane and water, and static-

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Technical ideas of recovery enhancement in the Sulige Gasfield during the 13th Five-Year Plan

open access: yesNatural Gas Industry B, 2016
Based on the exploration and development achievements of the Sulige Gasfield in the Ordos Basin, tight sandstone gas yield has been increased essentially in China. Recovery enhancement is always the core subject in researches.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...
