Frustration without competing interactions
Journal of Statistical Physics, 1989The concept of frustration is investigated following an idea of Anderson. A simple, frustrated in Anderson's sense, nonrandom classical lattice spin system without competing interactions is discussed, which exhibits infinitely many equilibrium states at low temperature.

Intercultural Interaction Competence (ICIC)
2009Interaction between members of different cultural groups can be challenging in many different ways, as the experiential examples throughout this book illustrate. In Chapter 2 we explored the many different ways in which cultural groups can differ — values, orientations to life, beliefs, attitudes to time, communicative conventions and styles, and so on.

Development of interactional competence
Pragmatics and Society, 2012This study explores the development of the interactional competence of an 8-year-old, Japanese learner of English over three cooking sessions with native speakers of English at her home during her period of residence in Australia. The study draws upon Vygotsky’s (1978) zone of proximal development in order to elucidate the L2 child’s process of ...

Potts models with competing interactions
Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General, 1987The mock ANNNI model is generalized in replacing the Ising spins by q-state Potts variables. Performing exact dedecoration transformations for general q and using Monte Carlo techniques in two dimensions for q=3, a multitude of distinct spatially modulated long-range ordered phases, as well as phases with algebraic order, are found to spring from ...

Interactional competence and politeness
2015Few studies in politeness research have examined perception, and even fewer have examined perception at the level of discourse. Salient characteristics of discourse, turn-taking and collaborative talk have been linked to politeness. This study approaches collaborative talk from an unexplored perspective: experimental testing of speaker perception of ...

Interaction competencies of salespeople
2022Globalization forces companies to find customers and cooperation partners on an international level. In this process, the salesforces of enterprises play a very important role since they represent the international companies to the outside world and are in direct contact with customers in various regions. Due to the strongly flourishing economy in Asia

Doing Versus Assessing Interactional Competence
2019The question of what counts as competent participation in interaction in a second language (L2) presents challenges for language assessment research and practice. Specifying features of talk and conduct that constitute such ‘interactional competence’ (IC) involves determining which “methods of interaction” are indices of IC in an L2.

Quantum antiferromagnets with competing interactions
Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 1999Abstract By applying the method of hierarchy of algebras, we derive exact thermodynamic results of the square 4×4 lattice and of the linear ring of 16 s= 1 2 spins described by an isotropic Heisenberg Hamiltonian. Next-nearest-neighbour interactions are taken into account.

Developing Competence in Intercultural Interaction
2009We mentioned several times in Chapter 8 that one important purpose of intercultural assessment is to promote reflection and to aid the development of ICIC. This chapter focuses specifically on the development process, and deals with two main contexts: professional contexts and school education contexts.

Competing Risks, Interactions and Crossing Hazards
1988Byar (1985 a) has analysed some data from a randomised clinical trial comparing treatment for patients with prostate cancer in stages 3 and 4. A full listing of the data is given in Byar (1985 b). Treatment consisted of different doses of diethylstil- bestrol (DES): 0 (placebo), 0.2 mg, 1 mg and 5 mg daily.
