From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Speech markers in social interaction

open access: yes, 1979
Originally published in 1979, this book presents an interdisciplinary study of the role of social markers in speech. Each chapter explores the nature and functioning of speech markers from a different social, biological or psychological perspective, and the volume offers a systematic survey of facts and ideas concerning the remarkable wealth of ...

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

Genetic relationships within and among Iberian fescues (Festuca L.) based on PCR-amplified markers

open access: yes, 2006
The genus Festuca comprises approximately 450 species and is widely distributed around the world. The Iberian Penninsula, with more than 100 taxa colonizing very diverse habitats, is one of its main centers of diversification. This study was conducted to

Markers as Facilitators: The Role of Playful Interactive Markers in Collaborative Mobile AR Games

open access: yesProceedings of the Extended Abstracts of the 2026 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems
This conference paper examines how playful interactive markers can support co-located collaboration in marker-based mobile augmented reality games. Building on hands-on interaction with a marker-based AR game prototype, the study explores how experts envision the role of playful markers in scaffolding cooperative action, interaction, and shared ...

Three phosphatase families form a community: The phosphohydrolases that act upon inositol pyrophosphates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.

On the interaction of some mirative markers in Italian

open access: yesLinguistica Brunensia
This paper explores the syntactic and semantic properties of some mirative strategies in Italian, and their possibility to co-occur without producing any redundancy in the utterance. By proposing a specific setting and an event that triggers the speaker's unprepared mind, we analyse the nature of some (syntactic) markers used to convey mirativity, from

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an
