The Mammalian Interaural Time Difference Detection Circuit Is Differentially Controlled by GABAB Receptors during Development [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Throughout development GABAB receptors (GABABRs) are widely expressed in the mammalian brain. In mature auditory brainstem neurons, GABABRs are involved in the short-term regulation of the strength and dynamics of excitatory and inhibitory inputs, thus ...

Clade‐wide morphological and functional variation of the sauropsid columella

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The columella (=stapes) is the middle ear bone of reptiles that transmits vibrations from the environment to the inner ear. It has been shown to exhibit extensive interspecific morphological disparity in several clades; however, its morphological variation and associated functional consequences remain poorly described.

Human auditory cortical processing of changes in interaural correlation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Sensitivity to the similarity of the acoustic waveforms at the two ears, and specifically to changes in similarity, is crucial to auditory scene analysis and extraction of objects from background.

Convolutive speech separation by combining probabilistic models employing the interaural spatial cues and properties of the room assisted by vision [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In this paper a new combination of the model of the interaural spatial cues and a model that utilizes spatial properties of the sources is proposed to enhance speech separation in reverberant environments.

Measuring and Modeling Cue Dependent Spatial Release from Masking in the Presence of Typical Delays in the Treatment of Hearing Loss

open access: yesTrends in Hearing, 2022
In asymmetric treatment of hearing loss, processing latencies of the modalities typically differ. This often alters the reference interaural time difference (ITD) (i.e., the ITD at 0° azimuth) by several milliseconds.

Predicting cochlear structural alterations from auditory function in age‐related hearing loss mice based on optical coherence tomography

open access: yesJournal of Intelligent Medicine, EarlyView.
Abstract With global population aging, age‐related hearing loss has become a major public health concern. Understanding the relationship between auditory functional decline and cochlear structural degeneration is essential for early detection and precise intervention.

Functional Dissociation Between Cervical VEMP and Posterior Canal vHIT in 1770 Unselected Ears

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
Cervical VEMP and posterior canal vHIT are conventionally treated as measures of a single inferior vestibular unit. In 1770 unselected ears from a diagnosis‐agnostic registry, the two tests disagreed in 72.7% of ears abnormal on at least one test, with chance‐corrected agreement near zero (κ = 0.097) and unchanged across age strata.

Integrating vision, audition and olfaction traits: a roadmap for contrasting sensory ecologies of birds and rodents

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Sensory ecology seeks to understand how organisms detect and use information from their environment, yet comparative analyses across multiple sensory modalities remain rare. Here, we present a roadmap for contrasting the sensory ecologies of birds and rodents using surrogate morphological and acoustic traits associated with vision, audition, and ...

Evaluation of a method for enhancing interaural level differences at low frequencies [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2016
A method (called binaural enhancement) for enhancing interaural level differences at low frequencies, based on estimates of interaural time differences, was developed and evaluated. Five conditions were compared, all using simulated hearing-aid processing: (1) Linear amplification with frequency-response shaping; (2) binaural enhancement combined with ...
