Interest Development and Learning

2019
Developing interest is a powerful support for deeper learning. The presence of even some interest beneficially affects individuals’ attention and memory, as well as their motivation and meaningful engagement. In this chapter, we expand on previous descriptions of the relation between interest and its development as conceptualized in the Four-Phase ...

The Role of Interest in Learning: Knowledge Acquisition at the Intersection of Situational and Individual Interest

2017
The objective of this chapter is to illuminate the role of interest in knowledge acquisition. In this chapter, we make a distinction between situational interest and individual interest and explain how both are related to knowledge. We will argue that the relations between these three concepts are at the heart of the education endeavor.

Learning aspects of interest from Gaze

Proceedings of the 6th workshop on Eye gaze in intelligent human machine interaction: gaze in multimodal interaction, 2013
This paper presents a probabilistic framework to model the gaze generative process when a user is browsing a content consisting of multiple regions. The model enables us to learn multiple aspects of interest from gaze data, to represent and estimate user's interest as a mixture of aspects, and to predict gaze behavior in a unified framework.

Interest and Learning

2006
AbstractPsychology's oldest writings about interest come from the field of education. This chapter reviews research on how interest affects learning, with an emphasis on reading and text processing. Interest promotes comprehension and memory for several reasons: interest increases attention to a text; interest makes people process a text more deeply ...

Learning to Find Interesting Connections in Wikipedia

2010 12th International Asia-Pacific Web Conference, 2010
To help users answer the question, what is the relation between (real world) entities or concepts, we might need to go well beyond the borders of traditional information retrieval systems. In this paper, we explore the possibility of exploiting the Wikipedia link graph as a knowledge base for finding interesting connections between two or more given ...

Making Learning Parallel Processing Interesting

2012 IEEE 26th International Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium Workshops & PhD Forum, 2012
The abundant availability of multi-core computers makes "parallel computers" a common place and teaching Computer Science students to be able to design and develop parallel algorithms an urgent task. Most students recognize the needs of developing skills in parallel programming. However, since their Computer Science related curriculum are mostly taught

Learning in the Presence of Self-Interested Agents

Proceedings of the 39th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS'06), 2006
In many situations a principal gathers a data sample containing positive and negative examples of a concept to induce a classification rule using a machine learning algorithm. Although learning algorithms differ from each other in various aspects, there is one essential issue that is common to all: the assumption that there is no strategic behavior ...

Interest mining in virtual learning environments

Online Information Review, 2008
PurposeBehaviour in virtual learning environments (VLE), including travel, gaze, manipulate, gesture and conversation, offer considerable information about the user's implicit interest. The purpose of this study is to find an approach for user interest mining via behaviour analysis in a VLE.Design/methodology/approachAccording to research in psychology,

Game Penalties Decrease Learning and Interest

2013
Penalties are frequently used in games and rarely in tutors, creating a dilemma for designers seeking to combine games and tutors to maximize fun and learning. On the one hand, penalties can be frustrating and waste instructional time, on the other, they may increase excitement and prevent gaming.
