Finite element models of orthopedic implants such as hip resurfacing femoral components usually rely on contact elements to model the load-bearing interfaces that connect bone, cement and implant. However, contact elements cannot simulate progressive degradation of bone–cement interfaces or osseointegration.

Rupture and Damage at Dilatant Geological Interfaces
Key Engineering Materials, 2019The work discusses the processes that can be present at fractures and defects at geological interfaces. The introductory comment clearly indicates that the computational approaches offer the most appropriate methods for examining complex contact problems at geomaterial interfaces.

Nd:YAG Laser Damage of Graphene–Nickel Interfaces Nd:YAG Laser Damage of Graphene–Nickel Interfaces
2016In this work we investigate the damage induced on a graphene–nickel interface after the exposure to Nd:YAG infrared laser radiation. The damage threshold has been experimentally determined. We observe that once the fluence exceeds the threshold value, both the morphology and the physical–chemical properties of the samples change. This has been verified

Interface Damage of Ceramic-Matrix Composites
2018Under cyclic fatigue loading, the damage mechanisms of fiber/matrix interface debonding, interface sliding and interface wear degrade the fiber/matrix interface shear stress. The fiber/matrix interface shear stress plays an important role in the fatigue behavior of fiber-reinforced ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs).
