From Aleph to Emoji. Semi-Serious Critique of Icons’ Affordance in the Digital Ecosystem Design

open access: yesimg journal, 2023
The paper proposes a critical reflection on the use of icons –silent images– capable of communicating functionality, interactions and emotions, within digital communication ecosystems with particular reference to the mimesis/realism dichotomy and the ...

Design of haptic interfaces for therapy [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, 2009
Touch is fundamental to our emotional well-being. Medical science is starting to understand and develop touch-based therapies for autism spectrum, mood, anxiety and borderline disorders. Based on the most promising touch therapy protocols, we are presenting the first devices that simulate touch through haptic devices to bring relief and assist clinical

Designing attentive interfaces [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the symposium on Eye tracking research & applications - ETRA '02, 2002
In this paper, we propose a tentative framework for the classification of Attentive Interfaces, a new category of user interfaces. An Attentive Interface is a user interface that dynamically prioritizes the information it presents to its users, such that information processing resources of both user and system are optimally distributed across a set of ...

The design of a spoken language interface [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the workshop on Speech and Natural Language - HLT '90, 1990
Fast and accurate speech recognition systems systems bring with them the possibility of designing effective voice driven applications. Efforts to this date have involved the construction of monolithic systems, necessitating repetition of effort as each new system is implemented.

How The Arts Can Help Tangible Interaction Design: A Critical Re-Orientation

open access: yesInformatics, 2017
There is a long history of creative encounters between tangible interface design and the Arts. However, in comparison with media art, tangible interaction seems to be quite anchored into many of the traditional methodologies imported from human–computer ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Product Interface Design for Complexity Management in Assembly Systems

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2020
Manufacturing firms are facing the challenge of minimizing variety-induced complexity in assembly systems. One of the effective approaches to complexity management is to reconfigure the assembly system by rearranging its assembly sequence.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.
