Validation of an automated enzyme immunoassay for interleukin-6 for routine clinical use [PDF]
Serum levels of Interleukin-6 (IL-6), a proinflammatory cytokine, are increased in early stages of inflammatory diseases such as infection and sepsis. Assay systems which permit its measurement within a few hours and as a single measurement have not been

Balance between Interleukin-18 and Interleukin-18 binding protein in auto-inflammatory diseases
Interleukin (IL)-18 is a member of the IL-1 family of cytokines with pleiotropic and potent pro-inflammatory activities that are tightly controlled at the level of production and in the extracellular space. Indeed, IL-18 is translated as a leaderless biologically inert pro-peptide that is cleaved by caspase-1 in its N-terminus domain to become active ...

Interleukin 18 polymorphisms and its serum level in patients with multiple sclerosis
Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic demyelinating disorder of central nervous system. Although the definite pathogenesis of MS has not been understood, crucial role of environmental and genetic risk factors has been proposed.

Signaling via interleukin-4, receptor alpha chain is required for successful vaccination against schistosomiasis in BALB/c mice [PDF]
Radiation-attenuated (RA) schistosome larvae are potent stimulators of innate immune responses at the skin site of exposure (pinna) that are likely to be important factors in the development of Th1-mediated protective immunity.

Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Interleukin-18: Perspectives on the Newest Interleukin
Just over two years ago the newest member of the interleukin family of cytokines, IL-18, was molecularly cloned. IL-18 was originally identified as a result of its ability to induce interferon gamma production, however with the advent of its cloning and the production of recombinant protein a number of other biological actions have since been ...

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Airway epithelium expresses interleukin-18 [PDF]
Interleukin (IL)-18 is an interferon (IFN)-gamma-inducing cytokine suggested to be important in regulating inflammatory responses. This study investigated the pulmonary expression of IL-18 under conditions characterized by T-helper (Th)1 (lipopolysaccharide (LPS) treatment/sarcoidosis) and Th2 (ovalbumin (OVA) challenge/asthma) cytokine production.

Inhibition of CDK9 enhances AML cell death induced by combined venetoclax and azacitidine
The CDK9 inhibitor AZD4573 downregulates c‐MYC and MCL‐1 to induce death of cytarabine (AraC)‐resistant AML cells. This enhances VEN + AZA‐induced cell death significantly more than any combination of two of the three drugs in AraC‐resistant AML cells.

Background The cytokine, interleukin-18 (IL-18), was originally identified as an interferon-γ-inducing proinflammatory factor; however, there is increasing evidence suggesting that it has non-immunological effects on physiological functions.
