Influence of intermediate principal stress on the fault strength

Physics of Fluids
Earthquake risk assessment of fault often overlooks the influence of intermediate principal stress (σ2) on fault. However, recent studies have shown that σ2 can alter the internal friction angle, which in turn affects the friction coefficient and strength of rock.

Effects of Cyclic Rotation of Principal Stress Axes and Intermediate Principal Stress Parameter on the Deformation Behavior of Sands

Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics IV, 2008
Four series of drained tests on sands were performed with a hollow cylinder apparatus in order to investigate the fundamental deformation behavior of sands and the effects of the intermediate principal stress parameter b during cyclic rotation of principal stress axes.

Effects of Cyclic Intermediate Principal Stress on the Deformation of Saturated Clay

Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, 2018
AbstractOne-way cyclic loading induced by traffic loads will give rise to the cyclic variation of normal stress components of all three directions, including one vertical and two horizontal ones.

Effect of intermediate principal stress on strength of anisotropic rock mass

Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology, 1998
Abstract The Mohr-Coulomb criterion needs to be modified for highly anisotropic rock material and jointed rock masses. Taking σ2 into account, a new strength criterion is suggested because both σ2 and σ3 would contribute to the normal stress on the existing plane of weakness.

Influence of Intermediate Principal Stress Effect on Flat Punch Problems

Key Engineering Materials, 2013
Using the finite difference code FLAC3D (Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua in 3 Dimensions) and UST (Unified Strength Theory), the influence of the intermediate principal stress effect on the problems of flat punch are analyzed in this paper. The values of the ultimate bearing capacity resulting from numerical analyses and the analytical solution of ...

Effect of Intermediate Principal Stress on the Mechanical Behavior of Angular Sand

Soil Behavior and Geomechanics, 2014
Sand is a naturally occurring, cohesionless, granular material with varying morphology. It has been well studied as a model frictional material, and the strength of the sand ensemble is derived from the inter-granular friction. Facets of sand behaviour, such as the inherent anisotropy and effect of intermediate principal stress, are extremely important
