Effect of intermediate principal stress on strength of soft rock under complex stress states

Journal of Central South University, 2014
A series of numerical simulations of conventional and true triaxial tests for soft rock materials using the three-dimensional finite difference code FLAC3D were presented. A hexahedral element and a strain hardening/softening constitutive model based on the unified strength theory (UST) were used to simulate both the consolidated-undrained (CU ...

A unified method to describe the influences of intermediate principal stress and stress history in constitutive modelling

2008
It is usually known that the intermediate principal stress and the stress histories have large influences on the deformation and the strength of soil. The influences of these factors, i.e. stress-induced anisotropy, therefore should be considered properly in a constitutive model of soils.

Effect of Intermediate Principal-Stress Ratio on Particle Breakage of Rockfill Material

Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, 2016
AbstractThe true triaxial compression test is the three-dimensional test, where the intermediate principal stress is not less than the minor principal stress and not more than the major principal stress. The effect of the intermediate principal stress ratio (i.e., the b-value) on particle breakage of rockfill material (RFM) was investigated by ...

The effect of the intermediate principal stress on fault formation and fault angle in siltstone

Journal of Structural Geology, 2010
Abstract We conducted true triaxial compression tests on specimens prepared from two siltstone core sections, one above and one below the Chelungpu Fault, Taiwan. For different constant σ 2 and σ 3 magnitudes, the maximum principal stress ( σ 1 ) was raised until a post failure stage was reached, and a through-going fault had developed ...

Effect of Intermediate Principal Stress on the Behavior of Granular Materials at a Low Mean Stress by DEM

Geotechnical and Geological Engineering, 2019
This study examines the macro- and micro-mechanical behaviors of granular materials at a low mean stress in general triaxial loading using the discrete element method. Spheres were used to model the particles to reduce the computational costs. They were placed in the grid points of a cube with their random values of diameters.
