Damping of quasi-2D internal wave attractors by rigid-wall friction

open access: yes, 2017
The reflection of internal gravity waves at sloping boundaries leads to focusing or defocusing. In closed domains, focusing typically dominates and projects the wave energy onto 'wave attractors'.

Rapid Fabrication of Self‐Propelled and Steerable Magnetic Microcatheters for Precision Medicine

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A rapid Joule heating fabrication method for the production of self‐propelling, adaptive microcatheters, with tunable stiffness and integrated microfluidic channels is presented. Demonstrated through three microrobotic designs, including a steerable guiding catheter, an untethered wave‐crawling TubeBot, and a distal‐end propelled microcatheter, it was ...

On the Normal Force and Static Friction Acting on a Rolling Ball Actuated by Internal Point Masses

open access: yes, 2019
The goal of this paper is to investigate the normal and tangential forces acting at the point of contact between a horizontal surface and a rolling ball actuated by internal point masses moving in the ball's frame of reference.

Vacuum Friction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We know that in empty space there is no preferred state of rest. This is true both in special relativity but also in Newtonian mechanics with its associated Galilean relativity.

Flexoelectrically Induced Polar Topology in Twisted SrTiO3 Membranes

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Twisted SrTiO3 bilayers host polar vortices of flexoelectric origin, revealed through combined experiment and theory. By reconstructing polarization from the toroidal moment of strain gradients, the work establishes a 3D chiral state with broken inversion and mirror symmetries.

Using High-Density Polyethylene and Novolac Polymers to Improve the Properties of Gypseous Soil

open access: yesمجلة النهرين للعلوم الهندسية
This study explores the impact of adding high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and Novolac polymers to gypseous soil from Tikrit City, Iraq, to enhance its geotechnical properties.

Evaluating the Seismic Bearing Capacity of Strip Foundation Adjacent to Geogrid-Reinforced Slopes Using Finite Element Limit Analysis Method [PDF]

open access: yesپژوهش‌های زیرساخت‌های عمرانی
Building construction on slopes is inevitable, despite many limitations. Due to the seismicity of Iran, calculating the seismic bearing capacity of foundations is more important.

Active Brownian Particles. From Individual to Collective Stochastic Dynamics

open access: yes, 2012
We review theoretical models of individual motility as well as collective dynamics and pattern formation of active particles. We focus on simple models of active dynamics with a particular emphasis on nonlinear and stochastic dynamics of such self ...

Triply‐Twinned Metamaterials: Unraveling the Mechanics and Failure Pathways Through High‐Resolution XCT

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Triply‐twinned architected lattices transform deformation from bending to stretching of struts, delivering up to threefold increases in stiffness and strength across polymeric and metallic systems. High‐resolution synchrotron XCT and image‐based simulations reveal how meta‐grain architecture, defects, and AM build orientation govern failure pathways ...

PREDICTION OF ANGLE OF INTERNAL FRICTION OF SAND USING GRAIN-SIZE DISTRIBUTION CURVE [PDF]

open access: yesJES. Journal of Engineering Sciences, 2008
The shear strength parameters play an important role in many practices for geotechnical engineering. To determine the real values of these parameters requires undisturbed samples and that is difficult for cohesionless soil. So, prediction of shear strength parameter such as angle of internal friction in the case of cohesionless soil with the help of ...
