Directional discontinuities in the interplanetary magnetic field [PDF]

open access: yesSolar Physics, 1969
It is shown that the interplanetary magnetic field has different characteristics on different scales, and it is noted that a given physical theory may not be applicable or relevant on all scales. Four scales are defined in terms of time intervals on which the data may be viewed.

Characteristics of Interplanetary Discontinuities in the Inner Heliosphere Revealed by Parker Solar Probe [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2021
Abstract We present a statistical analysis for the characteristics and spatial evolution of the interplanetary discontinuities (IDs) in the solar wind, from 0.13–0.9 au, by using the Parker Solar Probe measurements on Orbits 4 and 5. We collected 3948 IDs, including 2511 rotational discontinuities (RDs) and 557 tangential discontinuities

Diffusion at the Earth magnetopause: enhancement by Kelvin-Helmholtz instability [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2007
Using hybrid simulations, we examine how particles can diffuse across the Earth's magnetopause because of finite Larmor radius effects. We focus on tangential discontinuities and consider a reversal of the magnetic field that closely models the ...

Characterization of waves in the vicinity of an interplanetary directional discontinuity [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2007
Directional discontinuities are frequently encountered in the solar wind. This study utilizes the possibility of simultaneous four‐point measurements that the Cluster satellites provide for an investigation of the waves near one such interplanetary discontinuity event. In particular, the k‐filtering technique has for the first time been applied for the

The θBn problem: Determination of local magnetic parameters of interplanetary shocks from in situ IMF data [PDF]

open access: yesGeofísica Internacional, 2001
The angle θBn is the angle between the upstream magnetic field and the shock normal direction and is important for many phenomena in interplanetary physics.

Magnetosheath dynamic pressure enhancements: occurrence and typical properties [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2013
The first comprehensive statistical study of large-amplitude (> 100%) transient enhancements of the magnetosheath dynamic pressure reveals events of up to ~ 15 times the ambient dynamic pressure with durations up to 3 min and an average duration of

Magnetosheath Reconnection Before Magnetopause Reconnection Driven by Interplanetary Tangential Discontinuity: A Three‐Dimensional Global Hybrid Simulation With Oblique Interplanetary Magnetic Field [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2018
AbstractTerrestrial dayside dynamics associated with a southward turning, oblique interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) carried by an interplanetary tangential discontinuity (TD) is investigated by performing a three‐dimensional global‐scale hybrid simulation systematically for cases in which the incoming solar wind TD possesses various magnetic field ...

Energetic electron enhancements under the radiation belt (L < 1.2) during a non-storm interval on 1 August 2008 [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2019
An unusual event of deep injections of >30 keV electrons from the radiation belt to low L shells (L<1.2) in the midnight–dawn sector was found from NOAA/POES observations during quiet geomagnetic conditions on 1 August 2008.

A review of discontinuities and Alfvén waves in interplanetary space: Ulysses results [PDF]

open access: yesReviews of Geophysics, 1999
The Ulysses mission is the first to explore our heliosphere at all latitudes up to ±80° and therefore is an ideal mission to study potential gradients in heliolatitude (and radial distance) of discontinuity occurrence rates and types. Directional discontinuities (DDs) are shown to be dependent on the type of solar wind streams that they are embedded in.

Characteristics of the near-tail dawn magnetopause and boundary layer [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2005
The paper discusses properties of the near-tail dawnside and boundary layer, as obtained from Cluster plasma and magnetic field measurements during a single skimming orbit on 4 and 5 July 2001 that included 24 well-defined crossings by all four ...
