Irregular Proton Injection to High Energies at Interplanetary Shocks

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters, 2023
How thermal particles are accelerated to suprathermal energies is an unsolved issue, crucial for many astrophysical systems. We report novel observations of irregular, dispersive enhancements of the suprathermal particle population upstream of a high ...

On the Effects of the Solar Wind Structure in the Global Distribution of dBH/dt ${\text{dB}}_{H}/\text{dt}$ Spikes During Geomagnetic Storms

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Variations in the solar wind, particularly those associated with interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) and high‐speed streams (HSSs), drive geomagnetic disturbances that produce rapid changes in the ground magnetic field. These variations, commonly quantified by the time derivative of the horizontal magnetic field dBH/dt $\left({\text ...

Cosmic Ray Anisotropy Generated by the June 22nd 2015 Interplanetary Events

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract On 22 June 2015, the near Earth interplanetary space was perturbed by a series of high‐speed streamers and interplanetary coronal mass ejections associated with an active region and two low‐latitude coronal holes. The interaction of these disturbances gave rise to the complex solar wind structure observed at 1 au.

Collisionless Shocks: Contemporary State After Three Quarters of a Century of Research

open access: yesReviews of Geophysics, Volume 64, Issue 3, September 2026.
Abstract The collisionless shock research started in the late 1950s. Since then, plenty of data have been accumulated due to the large number of missions in the heliosphere, providing in situ measurements of the fields and particles. The quality of these measurements has vastly improved, especially in the last two decades.

Forecasting Geomagnetically Induced Currents From Solar Wind and Geoelectric Field Data Using Deep Learning: Application in Fujian, China

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract We developed a multi‐module convolutional neural network combined with a multi‐head attention mechanism (MM‐CNN‐MHA) to forecast geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) at the Huangmeishan (HMS) 220‐kV substation in Fujian Province, China.

A case study of large-amplitude ULF waves in the Martian foreshock

open access: yesEarth and Planetary Physics, 2020
Foreshock ultralow frequency (ULF) waves constitute a significant physical phenomenon in the plasma environment of terrestrial planets. The occurrence of these waves, associated with backstreaming particles reflected and accelerated at the bow shock ...

Major Space Weather Risks Identified via Coupled Physics‐Engineering‐Economic Modeling

open access: yesAGU Advances, Volume 7, Issue 6, September 2026.
Abstract Space weather poses an important but under‐quantified threat to society. While severe geomagnetic storms are recognized as potential global catastrophes, their socio‐economic impacts remain poorly quantified. We present a novel physics‐engineering‐economic framework that links geophysical drivers to power grid geoelectric fields, transformer ...

Interplanetary Shocks Observed from Multipoints at Venus and 1 au

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We present a database of 12 fast forward interplanetary (IP) shocks observed in situ by radially aligned spacecraft (Venus Express, Wind, and/or STEREO) between 2006 and 2014.

Global Circulation of Martian Ionospheric Currents Revealed by Magnetometer Data

open access: yesAGU Advances, Volume 7, Issue 6, September 2026.
Abstract In the dynamo region of the Martian ionosphere, a large‐scale current is generated by charge separation: ions collide with neutrals while electrons preferentially gyrate around local magnetic field lines. Using MAVEN magnetometer data and a physics‐informed neural network constrained by Ampère's law and Gauss's law for magnetism (the Neural ...

Extreme Radiation Belt Dropout During the May 2024 Superstorm

open access: yesAGU Advances, Volume 7, Issue 6, September 2026.
Abstract The geomagnetic superstorm in May 2024 represents the most extreme space weather event over the past two decades, offering a unique opportunity to investigate radiation belt electron dynamics under exceptionally strong solar wind driving conditions. Observations from the Arase satellite show that relativistic electron fluxes dropped by several
