Approximation hardness of optimization problems in intersection graphs of d-dimensional boxes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The Maximum Independent Set problem in d-box graphs, i.e., in the intersection graphs of axis-parallel rectangles in R d , is a challenge open problem. For any fixed d ≥ 2 the problem is NP-hard and no approximation algorithm with ratio o(log d−1 n) is ...

Low‐Angle Grain Boundaries and Re‐Segregation in Single‐Crystalline Ni‐Base Superalloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates that Re‐segregation at low‐angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) in Ni‐base superalloys is influenced by misorientation angle. Advanced microscopy and atom probe tomography reveal that higher misorientation angles increases Re‐segregation.

Intersection Decision Support Surveillance System: Design, Performance and Initial Driver Behavior Quantization [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
In rural Minnesota, approximately one-third of all crashes occur at intersections. Analysis of crash statistics and reports of crashes at rural expressway through-stop intersections shows that, for drivers who stop before entering the intersection, the ...

Hesitant Fuzzy h-ideals of \Gamma-hemirings

open access: yesJournal of New Theory, 2020
The purpose of this paper is to introduce and study hesitant fuzzy h-ideals ( h-bi-ideals, h-quasi-ideals) of a \Gamma-hemiring. We investigate several properties ofthese ideals.

Rafting of Ni‐Based Superalloys Under Multiaxial Load as Understood by Phase‐Field Simulations and Critical Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Phase‐field simulations coupled with dislocation‐density‐based crystal plasticity modeling reproduce γ′ rafting behavior in single‐crystal Ni‐based superalloys under varied loading conditions. The model captures both macroscopic creep and microscopic morphology evolution, with results matching high‐temperature creep experiments.

A Simulator-Based Evaluation of Smart Infrastructure Concepts for Intersection Decision Support for Rural Thru-STOP Intersections [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
This report describes the human factors basis for an intersection decision support (IDS) system intended to improve the safety of rural intersections in Minnesota's Interregional Corridors (IRCs).

Phase Field Failure Modeling: Brittle‐Ductile Dual‐Phase Microstructures under Compressive Loading

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The approach by Amor and the approach by Miehe and Zhang for asymmetric damage behavior in the phase field method for fracture are compared regarding their fitness for microcrack‐based failure modeling. The comparison is performed for the case of a dual‐phase microstructure with a brittle and a ductile constituent.

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

Undesign: Critical Practices at the Intersection of Art and Design [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Undesign brings together leading artists, designers and theorists working at the intersection of art and design. The text focuses on design practices, and conceptual approaches, which challenge the traditional notion that design should emphasise its ...

Multimodal Data‐Driven Microstructure Characterization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A self‐consistent autonomous workflow for EBSP‐based microstructure segmentation by integrating PCA, GMM clustering, and cNMF with information‐theoretic parameter selection, requiring no user input. An optimal ROI size related to characteristic grain size is identified.
