Putative Extracellular Electron Transfer in Methanogenic Archaea

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2021
It has been suggested that a few methanogens are capable of extracellular electron transfers. For instance, Methanosarcina barkeri can directly capture electrons from the coexisting microbial cells of other species.

Geobacter grbiciae—A New Electron Donor in the Formation of Co-Cultures via Direct Interspecies Electron Transfer

open access: yesMicrobiology Research, 2023
Geobacter grbiciae can grow via coupling oxidation of ethanol to the reduction of various forms of soluble Fe(III) and poorly crystalline Fe(III) oxide, suggesting that G.

A review of interspecies electron transfer in anaerobic digestion

open access: yesIOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, 2019
Abstract Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an effective way to recover energy from organic waste. About 70% of the methane emitted into the atmosphere is derived from the degradation of organic matter by microorganisms under anaerobic conditions.

Catabolism and interactions of uncultured organisms shaped by eco-thermodynamics in methanogenic bioprocesses

open access: yesMicrobiome, 2020
Background Current understanding of the carbon cycle in methanogenic environments involves trophic interactions such as interspecies H2 transfer between organotrophs and methanogens. However, many metabolic processes are thermodynamically sensitive to H2

What physicochemical properties of biochar facilitate interspecies electron transfer in anaerobic digestion: a case study of digestion of whiskey by-products [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
The efficiency of microbial interspecies electron transfer between syntrophic bacteria and methanogens is considered a rate-limiting factor for the overall efficiency of anaerobic digestion (AD). Stimulating interspecies electron transfer by biochars has

Biochemical Evidence for formate transfer in syntrophic propionate oxidizing cocultures of Syntrophobacter fumaroxidans and Methanospirillum hungatei

open access: yes, 2002
The hydrogenase and formate dehydrogenase levels in Syntrophobacter fumaroxidans and Methanospirillum hungatei were studied in syntrophic propionate-oxidizing cultures and compared to the levels in axenic cultures of both organisms.

Proteomic analysis reveals metabolic and regulatory systems involved the syntrophic and axenic lifestyle of Syntrophomonas wolfei.

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2015
Microbial syntrophy is a vital metabolic interaction necessary for the complete oxidation of organic biomass to methane in all-anaerobic ecosystems.

Post-translational flavinylation is associated with diverse extracytosolic redox functionalities throughout bacterial life

open access: yeseLife, 2021
Disparate redox activities that take place beyond the bounds of the prokaryotic cell cytosol must connect to membrane or cytosolic electron pools.

Chitosan‐Carbon Dot Composite Materials Form a Leaf Surface Barrier to Mitigate the Enrichment and Invasion of Nanoplastics: From Leaf Interface to Systemic Response

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Foliar spraying of CS‐CDs can form a film on the leaves of Brassica rapa, effectively reducing the enrichment and absorption of PS in the leaves, while increasing the biomass and nutrient content of the plants. In addition, CS‐CDs can also enrich the interfoliar microbial community and activate the plant's own defense metabolic pathways.

Magnetite-boosted syntrophic conversion of acetate to methane during thermophilic anaerobic digestion

open access: yesWater Science and Technology
Using a batch thermophilic anaerobic system established with 60 mL serum bottles, the mechanism on how microbial enrichments obtained from magnetite-amended paddy soil via repeated batch cultivation affected methane production from acetate was ...
