Persistent flocks of diverse motile bacteria in long-term incubations of electron-conducting cable bacteria, Candidatus Electronema aureum

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2023
Cable bacteria are centimeters-long filamentous bacteria that oxidize sulfide in anoxic sediment layers and reduce oxygen at the oxic-anoxic interface, connecting these reactions via electron transport.

Interspecies Electron Transfer via Hydrogen and Formate Rather than Direct Electrical Connections in Cocultures of Pelobacter carbinolicus and Geobacter sulfurreducens

open access: yes, 2012
Direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) is an alternative to interspecies H-2/formate transfer as a mechanism for microbial species to cooperatively exchange electrons during syntrophic metabolism.

Advantage of conductive materials on interspecies electron transfer-independent acetoclastic methanogenesis: A critical review

open access: yes, 2021
International audienceFossil-fuel overuse and global warming are calling for new techniques to provide sustainable fuels. Biomethane can be produced by anaerobic digestion of organic waste, yet microbial mechanisms involved are still debated ...

Wireless, Adaptable and Fully Implantable Battery‐powered Devices for Optical Stimulation of the Spinal Cord in Small Rodents

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Current technologies for spinal cord optogenetic stimulation rely on external power sources and face reliability constraints in freely behaving animals. Here, a fully implantable, battery‐powered optoelectronic device is introduced, enabling operation in any selected environment with wireless recharging for months‐long stimulation.

A new model for electron flow during anaerobic digestion: direct interspecies electron transfer to Methanosaeta for the reduction of carbon dioxide to methane

open access: yes, 2013
Anaerobic conversion of organic wastes and biomass to methane is an important bioenergy strategy, which depends on poorly understood mechanisms of interspecies electron transfer to methanogenic microorganisms.

Mitochondrial Carrier SLC25A13 Drives Ferroptosis Resistance and Immune Evasion via a STAT3–IFI6 Circuit in Breast Cancer

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
SLC25A13 is identified as an immunometabolic driver of triple‐negative breast cancer that sustains ferroptosis resistance and immune evasion through a STAT3–IFI6 circuit. Pharmacologic degradation of SLC25A13 restores ferroptosis sensitivity and enhances anti‐PD‐1 efficacy, highlighting a strategy to convert immune‐cold tumors into immunotherapy ...

Syntrophic Growth of Geobacter sulfurreducens Accelerates Anaerobic Denitrification

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2018
Nitrate is considered as a contamination since it’s over discharging to water incurs environmental problems. However, nitrate is an ideal electron sink for anaerobic pollutant degraders desiring electron acceptors due to the high redox potential ...

Disentangling the syntrophic electron transfer mechanisms of Candidatus geobacter eutrophica through electrochemical stimulation and machine learning

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
Interspecies hydrogen transfer (IHT) and direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) are two syntrophy models for methanogenesis. Their relative importance in methanogenic environments is still unclear. Our recent discovery of a novel species Candidatus

Syntrophic growth on formate: a new microbial niche in anoxic environments

open access: yes, 2008
Anaerobic syntrophic associations of fermentative bacteria and methanogenic archaea operate at the thermodynamic limits of life. The interspecies transfer of electrons from formate or hydrogen as a substrate for the methanogens is key.

Enhanced Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment by a Binary Electroactive Material: Pseudocapacitance/Conductance-Mediated Microbial Interspecies Electron Transfer

open access: yes, 2023
Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a promising method to treat organic matter. However, AD performance was limited by the inefficient electron transfer and metabolism imbalance between acid-producing bacteria and methanogens.
