Assessing soil and native high Andean grassland quality under grazing: A case study from the wet Puna of Peru

open access: yesGrassland Science, EarlyView.
Abstract High Andean grasslands are vulnerable to changes in their nutritional quality and carbon sequestration capacity, especially in grazing systems. This study evaluated soil quality and native grasses by measuring carbon, physicochemical parameters, and the nutritional quality of predominant species in the wet Puna of Junín, Peru.

Inheritance of boll traits in F₁ interspecific flax hybrids

open access: yes, 2014
Aims. Oil flax Linum humile and annual wild species L. angustifolium, L. bienne, L. hispanicum and L. crepitans are included in n = 15 group. Wild flax species are of interest due to important valuable traits such as resistance to diseases and extreme ...

Introduction : extent, processes and evolutionary impact of interspecific hybridization in animals

open access: yes, 2008
Since the time of Charles Darwin, studies of interspecific hybridization have been a major focus for evolutionary biologists. Although this phenomenon has often been viewed as problematic in the fields of ecology, taxonomy and systematics, it has become ...

Development of PCR, LAMP and HRM‐Based Molecular Species Diagnostic Tools for Identifying Four Agricultural Pests in the Genus Helicoverpa (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Within the subfamily Heliothinae, the genus Helicoverpa comprises several highly destructive agricultural pests, including H. armigera, H. assulta, H. punctigera and H. zea. These species cause significant global crop losses due to their wide host range, long‐distance migratory behaviour, and potential for interspecific hybridization.

Speciation of European bullheads (Cottus spp.): The next problem for taxonomy of northern freshwater fishes

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract High morphological and ecological diversity displayed by European bullheads led Freyhof et al. (2005) to describe 15 nominal species. However, the basis for declaring these nominal species is contentious due to a lack of rigorous statistical analysis of morphological variations among populations, limitations in the inferences made from ...

Diet of juvenile skipjack herring Alosa chrysochloris: Ontogenetic shifts, predator–prey size ratios and mouth gape allometry

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The skipjack herring Alosa chrysochloris inhabits Gulf of Mexico drainages, primarily the Mississippi River Basin, and estuarine environments in the Gulf of Mexico. The trophic ecology of the skipjack herring is poorly understood, therefore we quantified the length, mouth gape and gut contents of juvenile skipjack herring from the Mississippi ...
