Molecules and particles make up ∼40%–70% of carbon in the interstellar medium, yet the exact chemical structure of these constituents remains unknown. We present carbon K-shell absorption spectroscopy of the Galactic interstellar medium obtained with the

BD-22 3467, a DAO-type star exciting the nebula Abell 35 [PDF]
Spectral analyses of hot, compact stars with NLTE (non-local thermodynamical equilibrium) model-atmosphere techniques allow the precise determination of photospheric parameters.

Direct observations of low-mass, low-metallicity galaxies at z ≳ 4 provide an indispensable opportunity for detailed inspection of the ionization radiation, gas flow, and metal enrichment in sources similar to those that reionized the universe. Combining

A survey of ultraviolet interstellar absorption lines
A telescope-spectrometer on the Copernicus spacecraft made possible the measurement of many ultraviolet absorption lines produced by the interstellar gas. The present survey provides data on ultraviolet absorption lines in the spectra of 88 early-type stars.

Photodissociation of interstellar N2 [PDF]
Molecular nitrogen is one of the key species in the chemistry of interstellar clouds and protoplanetary disks and the partitioning of nitrogen between N and N2 controls the formation of more complex prebiotic nitrogen-containing species.

Herschel/HIFI observations of interstellar OH+ and H2O+ towards W49N: a probe of diffuse clouds with a small molecular fraction [PDF]
We report the detection of absorption by interstellar hydroxyl cations and water cations, along the sight-line to the bright continuum source W49N.

Dense molecular clouds in the SN2008fp host galaxy [PDF]
(abridged) We use observations of interstellar absorption features, such as atomic and molecular lines as well as diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs), towards SN2008fp to study the physical properties of extra-galactic diffuse interstellar clouds in the ...
