Reaction Networks For Interstellar Chemical Modelling: Improvements and Challenges

open access: yes, 2010
We survey the current situation regarding chemical modelling of the synthesis of molecules in the interstellar medium. The present state of knowledge concerning the rate coefficients and their uncertainties for the major gas-phase processes -- ion ...

Spaceborne and spaceborn: Physiological aspects of pregnancy and birth during interplanetary flight

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Crewed interplanetary return missions that are on the planning horizon will take years, more than enough time for initiation and completion of a pregnancy. Pregnancy is viewed as a sequence of processes – fertilization, blastocyst formation, implantation, gastrulation, placentation, organogenesis, gross morphogenesis, birth and neonatal ...

Molecules in Interstellar Space? [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1937
IN a recent note in NATURE1, and more in detail elsewhere2, Dr. T. Dunham, jun., has described his discovery of more interstellar lines due to K ( 7699.03), Ca ( 4227), Ti+ ( 3242.6 and others) and a number of other lines the origin of which has not yet been traced ( 3957.7, 4300.3, 4232.6). We have to add to these Merrill's interstellar lines3 ( 5780,

Over the possible role of metal atom clusters in cosmochemistry and in the origin of life

open access: yesRevista de Química, 1992
We present here the hypothesis of a possible relationship between metal atom clusters and the formation of organic molecules in the interstellar medium and on small bodies as a possible pathway to the origin of such molecules.

Disk and Envelope Streamers of the GGD 27-MM1 Massive Protostar

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
We present new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array 0.98 mm observations of the continuum emission and several molecular lines toward the high-mass protostellar system GGD 27-MM1, driving the HH 80-81 radio jet.

Dependence of Chemical Abundance on the Cosmic-Ray Ionization Rate in IC 348

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
Ions (e.g., ${{\rm{H}}}_{3}^{+}$ , H _2 O ^+ ) have been used extensively to quantify the cosmic-ray ionization rate (CRIR) in diffuse sightlines. However, measurements of the CRIR in low-to-intermediate density gas environments are rare, especially when

Can neutral and ionized PAHs be carriers of the UV extinction bump and the diffuse interstellar bands?

open access: yes, 2011
Up to now, no laboratory-based study has investigated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) species as potential carriers of both the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) and the 2175 A UV bump.

Determining the Methanol Deuteration in the Disk Around V883 Orionis with Laboratory Measured Spectroscopy

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
Deuterium fractionation, as studied through mono-deuterated methanol, is frequently used as a diagnostic tool to trace the physical conditions and chemical evolution of interstellar sources. This study investigates methanol deuteration in the disk around

Isotopic fractionation in interstellar molecules [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2017
AbstractThe level of isotopic fractionation in molecules provides insights into their formation environments and how they formed. In this article, we review hydrogen and nitrogen isotopic fractionation in low-mass star-forming regions. Interstellar molecules are significantly enriched in deuterium.

UV–Vis Spectra of Carbonic Acid: Rationalizing Experimental Redshifts between Monomer and Bulk based on (H2CO3)n Calculations

open access: yesChemPhysChem, Volume 26, Issue 18, September 19, 2025.
In bulk carbonic acid (e.g., in interstellar icy dust grains) cluster formation produces two distinct UV‐Vis spectral features redshifted by ≈2 eV (25 nm) and by ≈5 eV (80 nm) compared to gas phase single molecule carbonic acid 's adiabatic ionization energy. Theory and experiment were used to investigate the origin of these shifts.
