Development of ethical standards for research of animal-assisted interventions

open access: yesHuman-Animal Interactions
Research into animal-assisted interventions (AAI) is crucial for quality assurance and the development of professional standards. As research in AAI in various fields is growing, research ethics must be considered. In Germany, as in many other countries,

Intervention or collaboration? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
How can we design and build digital technologies to support people in poor and low-resource environments to achieve their objectives? And how can we do this inclusivelyand ethically, while considering the complexity of their living and working environ-ments?

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Periprocedural Coagulation Status in Percutaneous Interventions

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Interventional Radiology ISVIR, 2019
Hemostasis is a very elaborate process, and its knowledge is essential for every interventional radiologist. Abnormal coagulation parameters are associated with an increased risk of bleeding and require appropriate management. This review aims to briefly

Intervention as Intoxication!

open access: yesPerformance Philosophy, 2020
This guest edited journal issue follows on from the Performance Philosophy Biennial 2019 in Amsterdam. Featuring a wide range of research and contribution styles, reworked and elaborated further for this issue, contributors consider alternative ways of ‘intervening’.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Mir-195-5p targets Smad7 regulation of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway to promote osteogenic differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells

open access: yesBMC Cardiovascular Disorders
In this study, we sought to investigate the mechanisms of action of miR-195-5p in the osteogenic differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), and thereby provide novel insights and a reference for the targeted therapy of arterial media ...

Role of a Checklist to Improve Patient Safety in Interventional Radiology

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Interventional Radiology ISVIR, 2019
A checklist can be defined as a comprehensive formal list of essential actions to be taken in a specific fashion. This concept has been extended from the aviation industry to health care to improve patient outcome and patient satisfaction with a ...

An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.
