Most symptomatic disk herniations result in clinical manifestations (pain, reflex loss, muscle weakness) that resolve with conservative therapy, and only 5% to 10% of patients require surgery.

Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, 1972Asymptomatic lumbar and dorsal intervertebral disk calcification occurred in two children. One case remained asymptomatic 8 months and the other 3 years after their incidental discovery on chest roentgenograms. Most of the previously reported cases concerned the cervical spine, and were usually symptomatic.

JAMA, 1962Data are presented on 7 children with an infectious process of the intervertebral disk and on 1 child with involvement of the sacroiliac joint. Culture of material obtained by needle or open biopsy of the lesion, performed on 5 patients, revealed Staphylococcus aureus .
