Effect of Somatostatin on Intestinal Motility
Acta Radiologica. Diagnosis, 1978The effect of somatostatin on intestinal motility has been investigated. The demonstrated inhibition of the motility has proved to be suitable for performing double contrast examinations of the small intestine, particularly as the tolerability to somatostatin is better than to other comparative substances.

Perhaps because of the inherent difficulty in using horses as experimental animals, only a relatively small amount of data is as yet available regarding normal equine gut motility. However, it is clear that the horse is fundamentally similar to other mammalian species studied. The neural and humoral control of gut activity requires much exploration; it

Surgical alteration of intestinal motility
The American Journal of Surgery, 1973Abstract Small Teflon-coated stainless steel wire electrodes were used to monitor the electrical changes associated with “artificial sphincters” produced by ablation of segments of longitudinal muscle. In the area of muscle ablation there were disorganized slow waves of low amplitude compared to adjacent normal intestine.

Patterns of Intestinal Motility
Annual Review of Physiology, 1981The small intestine in vivo is capable of a variety of patterns of contraction. Many of these patterns can result in the propulsion of intestinal contents. In the healthy human, dog, and rat propulsion is caused by at least two different patterns. One pattern seen in the fasted animal results in the intermittent movement of material out of any given ...

Intestinal transplantation for motility disorders
Seminars in Pediatric Surgery, 2009Intestinal transplantation (ITx) has now become an accepted form of replacement therapy for intestinal failure (IF) and its complications. Disorders of bowel motility may represent up to 25% of patients on waiting lists for ITx. Some patients with short bowel as a cause for IF may also have dysmotile bowel.

Disorders of Small Intestinal Motility
Gastroenterology Clinics of North America, 1989This article reviews the pathophysiology of the disorders of small intestinal motility and the underlying diseases. These include pathologies that affect the whole gut wall, as well as those localized to the smooth muscle or neural elements. The principles of clinical evaluation and treatment are briefly discussed and possible future directions are ...

Current Opinion in Gastroenterology, 2004
In the past year, many studies were published in which new and relevant information on small intestinal motility in humans and laboratory animals was obtained.Although the reported findings are heterogeneous, some themes appear to be particularly interesting and novel.

Tachykinin receptors and intestinal motility
Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology, 1997Substance P (SP) and neurokinin A (NKA) are synthesized by enteric cholinergic motorneurons that project to the longitudinal and circular muscle of the mammalian intestine. Thus, acetylcholine, SP, and NKA are the excitatory neuromuscular transmitters in the intestine.

Pathophysiology of Small Intestinal Motility
Surgical Clinics of North America, 1993Only in the last few years have we begun to understand the effects of surgical procedures on contractile activity of the small intestine. Although most patients readily adapt to the procedures that are performed, operations such as small intestinal transplantation make it imperative that we pursue a more thorough understanding of the effects of surgery

Abnormal Intestinal Motility in Gastroschisis
Radiology, 1978The authors describe abnormal intestinal motility with a very slow transit time in eight children with gastroschisis. Other abnormal findings include malrotation, dilatation, and fixation of the loops of the bowel.
