Development of a Synthetic 3D Platform for Compartmentalized Kidney In Vitro Disease Modeling

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A fully synthetic, compartmentalized 3D kidney disease model is introduced. The kidney model combines a PEG‐based hydrogel matrix with anisotropic, enzymatically degradable rod‐shaped microgels to spatially arrange a triple co‐culture of key renal epithelial, endothelial, and fibroblast cells.

Organoids, organs-on-chips and other systems, and microbiota [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The human gut microbiome is considered an organ in its entirety and has been the subject of extensive research due to its role in physiology, metabolism, digestion, and immune regulation.

Highly Tunable and Cell‐Remodelable Thiol‐ene Alginate‐Peptide Crosslinked Hydrogels to Recreate Cellular and Organoid Microenvironments for Biofabrication

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Norbornene‐functionalized alginate is crosslinked with a di‐thiolated peptide sequence cleavable by cell‐secreted matrix metalloproteinases and decorated with cell‐adhesion peptides upon exposure to UV. Thyroid follicles, endometrial and intestinal organoids are encapsulated in a gentle manner with high cell viability and correct phenotype ...

A cancer rainbow mouse for visualizing the functional genomics of oncogenic clonal expansion. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Field cancerization is a premalignant process marked by clones of oncogenic mutations spreading through the epithelium. The timescales of intestinal field cancerization can be variable and the mechanisms driving the rapid spread of oncogenic clones are ...

Gut stem cell aging is driven by mTORC1 via a p38 MAPK-p53 pathway. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Nutrients are absorbed solely by the intestinal villi. Aging of this organ causes malabsorption and associated illnesses, yet its aging mechanisms remain unclear.

Targeting the tumor microenvironment in colorectal peritoneal metastases

open access: yes, 2020
Peritoneal metastasis (PM) occurs in approximately one in four colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. The pathophysiology of colorectal PM remains poorly characterized. Also, the efficacy of current treatment modalities, including surgery and intraperitoneal (

PTEN controls glandular morphogenesis through a juxtamembrane β-Arrestin1/ARHGAP21 scaffolding complex [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
PTEN controls three-dimensional (3D) glandular morphogenesis by coupling juxtamembrane signalling to mitotic spindle machinery. While molecular mechanisms remain unclear, PTEN interacts through its C2 membrane-binding domain with the scaffold protein β ...

Evaluation of the Dual Impact of Nanotechnologies on Health and Environment Through Alternative Bridging Models

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This review explores how alternative invertebrate and small‐vertebrate models advance the evaluation of nanomaterials across medicine and environmental science. By bridging cellular and organismal levels, these models enable integrated assessment of toxicity, biodistribution, and therapeutic performance.

Fibroblasts enhance the growth and survival of adult feline small intestinal organoids

open access: yesmSphere
Intestinal organoids are important cell culture models that complement live animal studies of many intestinal pathogens. Adult feline small intestinal organoids are needed for infectious disease research but are difficult to work with due to slow growth ...

A New 3D Colon on a Chip to Decipher the Influence of Mechanical Forces on the Physiological Cellular Ecosystem

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
To dissect how mechanical forces influence intestinal physiology, we developed a stretchable 3D colon‐on‐chip that integrates tunable topography, stiffness and peristalsis‐like motion within a physiologically relevant microenvironment. We showed that stretching is a dominant factor governing epithelial behavior, markedly enhancing proliferation and ...
