Multiple modes intra-prediction in intra coding

Intra-prediction is a widely used technique in intra coding. In H.264, nine directional prediction modes are used, and in AVS (audio-video coding standard of China), six modes are used. The paper proposes a multiple mode, intra-prediction scheme to achieve a better balance between prediction precision and side information cost.

Adaptive intra mode bit skip in intra coding

To reduce spatial redundancies in intra coding, Intra 4times4 mode provides nine directional prediction modes for every 4times4 block. In this paper, an adaptive intra mode bit skip method is proposed to improve coding efficiency in intra coding. The proposed method improves coding efficiency and reduces encoding complexity.

Intra-predictive transforms for image coding

This paper presents a new transform framework, intra-predictive transforms, for block-based image coding. The proposed framework unifies cross-block prediction and transforms within a block. Thus, it can exploit both the intra- and inter- block correlations.

Intra prediction improves coding performance by reducing inter pixel redundancy. However, to accommodate the use of block transforms, not all pixels can be predicted from reconstructed pixels that are located close to themselves.
