Intra Coding With Adaptive Partial Reconstruction
IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, 2013Intra prediction improves coding performance by reducing inter pixel redundancy. However, to accommodate the use of block transforms, not all pixels can be predicted from reconstructed pixels that are located close to themselves. This causes prediction performance to suffer as pixel values further apart are less correlated.

Advanced Scanning for Intra Frame Coding
2006 International Conference on Image Processing, 2006In this paper, it is shown that the coding efficiency of the current video compression standard H.264/AVC is not invariant to the orientation of the image. The reversible operations rotation (90°, 180°, 270°) and image flipping (vertical or horizontal) affect the overall performance.

Intra mode coding in HEVC standard
2012 Visual Communications and Image Processing, 2012New High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard is designed to provide substantial coding efficiency improvement compared to H.264/AVC. Latest subjective testing shows 50% improvement has been achieved. Many new technologies contribute to the overall improvement. Intra prediction with 35 modes is one of the key improvements.

Multiple direct mode for intra coding
2017 IEEE Visual Communications and Image Processing (VCIP), 2017In this paper, a multiple direct mode (MDM) method is presented for chroma intra coding. The main contributions of the proposed MDM method include two aspects: selection of multiple luma intra prediction modes from co-located luma blocks, and the derivation of chroma intra prediction modes from spatial neighbouring blocks.
