Pleistocene Legacies in the Contemporary Population Genetic Structure of an Acid‐Specialised Crayfish, the Threatened Sand Yabby Cherax robustus

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
This study describes the contemporary genetic structure of a vulnerable short‐range endemic crayfish which is restricted to the heavily fragmented heathland‐peatland complexes of southeast Queensland across a range of approximately 200 km2. Using high‐resolution genome‐wide SNP sequencing, we estimate that population divergence in this species ...

Fish Buffet: Dietary Observations in the Oman Saw‐Scaled Viper (Echis omanensis), with a Review of Fish‐Eating Vipers

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
We present the first records of the arid‐adapted Oman saw‐scaled vipers feeding on fish. Apon further review we identified 14 fish‐eating vipers globally. These findings suggest that fish may be more common in the diets of vipers than realized, although still rare, and likely to be region‐ or season‐specific prey.

Climatic niche divergence and high‐elevation adaptation promoted rapid diversification of Pimoa spiders in Pan‐Himalaya

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2026, Issue 9, September 2026.
The Pan‐Himalayan region harbors exceptional biodiversity, yet the origins and underlying mechanisms driving this remarkable diversity remain poorly understood, especially among species‐rich invertebrates. Pimoa spiders exhibit an intercontinental disjunct distribution across three major mountain regions: the Rockies, the Alps, and the Pan‐Himalaya ...

Recreational activities and human hunting strongly influence red deer space use to trails

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Assessing how animals adjust their movements to two widespread human activities, hunting and recreation, can provide critical insights into how these activities reshape red deer spatial behavior. In this study, we used GPS telemetry data from red deer in the Bavarian Forest National Park (Germany) to analyze their habitat selection and ...
