ABSTRACT Oceanographic and ecological conditions can be used to inform forecasts and decision‐making for marine resources, but the dominant drivers of recruitment variability remain poorly understood for many fish stocks. We developed a conceptual life‐history model of the oceanographic and ecological variables that influence the recruitment of ...

ABSTRACT We investigate the effect of ethnic diversity on occupational choices, particularly in care‐oriented occupations which are scarce in many high‐income countries. We use administrative data of all students in Switzerland to study two diversity dimensions: ethnic fractionalization and ethnic polarization.

Fitting ideals and module structure [PDF]
Let R be a commutative ring with a 1. Original work by H. Fitting showed how we can associate to each finitely generated E-module a unique sequence of R-ideals, which are known as Fitting Ideals. The aim of this thesis is to undertake an investigation of

We define and study Vassiliev invariants for (long) Morse knots. It is shown that there are Vassiliev invariants which can distinguish some topologically equivalent Morse knots.

Quantum invariants: a study of knots, 3-manifolds, and their sets
This book provides an extensive and self-contained presentation of quantum and related invariants of knots and 3-manifolds. Polynomial invariants of knots, such as the Jones and Alexander polynomials, are constructed as quantum invariants, i.e ...

Complexity of surgery manifolds and Cheeger-Gromov invariants
We present new lower bounds on the complexity of Dehn surgery manifolds of knots, using our recent result on the Cheeger-Gromov. invariants and triangulations. As an application, we give explicit examples of closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds with fixed first

On concordances in 3-manifolds
We describe an action of the concordance group of knots in the three-sphere on concordances of knots in arbitrary 3-manifolds. As an application we define the notion of almost-concordance between knots. After some basic results, we prove the existence of

New invariants of periodic knots
For knots in S3 we obtain new criteria for periodicity. We show that the Casson–Gordon invariants of a periodic knot are preserved under the periodic action lifted to the cyclic covers.

Generalized Bott-Cattaneo-Rossi invariants of high-dimensional long knots
47 pages; updated after referee process; extension of BCR invariants to non-parallelizable spaces; simplest version of the proof of the additivity under connected sum ; the bibliography and the introduction have been updated with references to an ...

Quasi-quantum groups, knots, three-manifolds, and topological field theory
We show how to construct, starting from a quasi-Hopf algebra, or quasi-quantum group, invariants of knots and links. In some cases, these invariants give rise to invariants of the three-manifolds obtained by surgery along these links.
