Efficacy Studies of Malaria Treatments in Africa: Efficient Estimation with Missing Indicators of Failure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Efficacy studies of malaria treatments can be plagued by indeterminate outcomes for some patients. The study motivating this paper defines the outcome of interest (treatment failure) as recrudescence and for some subjects, it is unclear whether a ...

Reconstruction of potential energy profiles from multiple rupture time distributions

open access: yes, 2010
We explore the mathematical and numerical aspects of reconstructing a potential energy profile of a molecular bond from its rupture time distribution.

When Poor Exciton Dissociation Limits Photocurrents in Organic Solar Cells: Why Low Offset Non‐Fullerene Acceptor Blends Can't Be Efficient

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The energetic offset between the donor and the acceptor components in organic photoactive layers is central to the tradeoff between photovoltage and photocurrent losses. This Perspective covers the most important issues surrounding this topic in non‐fullerene acceptor blends, from the difficulty of accurately determining state energies and driving ...

Droplet Electricity Generators With Maximized Energy Collection Zone Enabled by Aloe‐Inspired Midrib and Cuticle

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
An Aloe‐pinspired droplet electricity generator (A‐DEG) overcomes the limited energy collection zone of conventional DEGs by guiding impact droplets through a channeling midrib and artificial cuticle. The channeling midrib induces uni‐directional droplet spreading, while the artificial cuticle on the midrib further reinforces this behavior through its ...

Nonprescription Magnesium Supplement Use and Risk of Heart Failure in Patients With Diabetes: A Target Trial Emulation

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease
Background Both diabetes and low magnesium‐containing food intake may increase the risk of heart failure (HF). However, the effect of nonprescription magnesium supplements on the risk of HF or major adverse cardiac events in patients with diabetes is ...

Inverse Probability Weighting for Recurrent Event Models

open access: yes
Recurrent events are common and important clinical trial endpoints in many disease areas, e.g., cardiovascular hospitalizations in heart failure, relapses in multiple sclerosis, or exacerbations in asthma. During a trial, patients may experience intercurrent events, that is, events after treatment assignment which affect the interpretation or existence

Direct Mode‐Resolved Measurement of Interfacial Phonon Transport by Acoustic Phonon Reflectometry

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
We introduce a novel analysis, acoustic phonon reflectometry, that measures the mode‐resolved phonon reflection coefficient at semiconductor interfaces. In aluminum nitride, we observe excellent agreement with the acoustic mismatch model across three distinct interfaces.

Using Validation Data to Adjust the Inverse Probability Weighting Estimator for Misclassified Treatment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The inverse probability weighting (IPW) estimator is widely used to estimate the treatment effect in observational studies in which patient characteristics might not be balanced by treatment group.

3D Printing of Highly Dense and Translucent Zirconia Parts for Dental Applications: Effect of Filament Overlapping

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This study formulated a 5Y‐PSZ zirconia paste for extrusion‐based additive manufacturing via direct ink writing, producing dense ceramic structures for dental applications. A colloidal approach with 47 vol% nanometric powder and tailored additives optimized rheology and printability.
