Information Entropy Metrics to Address the Complexity of Cooperative Gating of Ion Channels

open access: yesEntropy
Ion channels in biological membranes can form spatially localized clusters that exhibit cooperative gating behavior. In this mode, the activity of one channel modulates the opening probability of its neighbors.

The Outer Vestibule of the Na+ Channel–Toxin Receptor and Modulator of Permeation as Well as Gating

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2010
The outer vestibule of voltage-gated Na+ channels is formed by extracellular loops connecting the S5 and S6 segments of all four domains (“P-loops”), which fold back into the membrane. Classically, this structure has been implicated in the control of ion

Hopping‐Mediated Zero‐Bias Photocharge Retention in Solution‐Processed Van Der Waals Heterostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Liquid–liquid interface assembly enables the fabrication of solution‐processed MoS2 and WSe2 centimeter‐scale, nanometer‐thick type‐II heterostructures on paper. Interfacial charge separation and hopping‐limited recombination produce rectification and persistent photocharge retention at zero bias.

What have we learned from two-pore potassium channels? Their molecular configuration and function in the human heart [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Two-pore domain potassium channels (K2P) control excitability, stabilize the resting membrane potential below firing threshold, and accelerate repolarisation in different cells.

Self-organized enhancement of conductivity in biological ion channels [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We discuss an example of self-organization in a biological system. It arises from long-range ion–ion interactions, and it leads us to propose a new kind of enhanced conduction in ion channels.

Nitride MXenes Beyond Carbides: Bridging the Gap Between Computational Prediction and Experimental Realization

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Nitride MXenes remain constrained by a persistent gap between computational prediction and experimental realization. This Review identifies the thermodynamic, kinetic, and chemical barriers limiting their synthesis, critically evaluates emerging fabrication routes, and proposes a multidimensional computational‐experimental framework to accelerate the ...

Reptation theory of ion channel gating

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 1990
Reptation theory is a highly successful approach for describing polymer dynamics in entangled systems. In turn, this molecular process is the basis of viscoelasticity. We apply a modified version of reptation dynamics to develop an actual physical model of ion channel gating.

Multidimensional‐Encoded High‐Fidelity Spectrometers With a Floating‐Base Bipolar Junction

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A floating‐base bipolar junction photodetector enables multidimensional spectral encoding through synergistic gate‐ and drain‐bias modulation of interfacial barrier matching. The resulting complementary spectral responses form a diverse, weakly correlated response matrix, enabling robust and high‐fidelity spectral reconstruction even at sub‐nanoampere ...

Ca2+-regulated Ca2+ channels with an RCK gating ring control plant symbiotic associations

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
CASTOR is a Lotus japonicus ion channel required for nuclear Ca2+ spiking and establishing rhizobial and mycorrhizal symbioses. Here, via structural and functional analysis, Kim et al.

Configuration‐Encoded Cell Alignment by Light‐Gated Silicon Photovoltaic Microcell Arrays

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Light‐gated silicon photovoltaic microcells convert pulsed illumination into localized electrical cues. Arranging otherwise similar microcells into four‐lobed, six‐lobed, or circular patterns directs fibroblasts into corresponding local arrangements without wired stimulation.
