High ionic strength electrokinetics

Advances in Colloid and Interface Science, 2004
The electrokinetic potentials at high ionic strengths can be measured by means of electroacoustic method. The reported values are surprisingly high: up to 25 mV in 1 mol dm(-3) 1:1 electrolyte solution. The IEP of metal oxides in concentrated solutions of 1:1 electrolytes shifts to substantially higher pH values with respect to the pristine value ...

Ionic strength effects on nucleoproteins

International Journal of Biochemistry, 1978
Abstract 1. 1. Homogenization of calf (Bos bovinus) thymus cells in 0.15 M triethanolamine hydrochloride (TEA-HC1) prior to the extraction of deoxyribonucleoprotein (DNP) with 0.01 M glycine results in the recovery of a fractionated DNP when compared to extracts from cells initially exposed to lower ionic strength TEA-HC1 solutions. 2. 2. The

Ionic Strength and Myofibrillar Protein Solubilization

Journal of Animal Science, 1987
Myofibrils from bovine longissimus muscle were obtained at 2 h postmortem and incubated in .10 to .35 M ionic strength buffers under various conditions in vitro. Increasing ionic strength or increasing the incubation time from 1 to 72 h decreased the turbidity of suspensions of myofibrils and increased myofibrillar solubilization (P less than .01 for ...

Derivation of a benchmark for freshwater ionic strength

Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, 2012
Abstract Because increased ionic strength has caused deleterious ecological changes in freshwater streams, thresholds for effects are needed to inform resource-management decisions. In particular, effluents from surface coal mining raise the ionic strength of receiving streams. The authors developed an aquatic life benchmark for specific

Charged Dislocations and the Strength of Ionic Crystals

Philosophical Magazine, 1958
Abstract If the energies required to form positive and negative ion vacancies in an ionic crystal are unequal, then in thermal equilibrium dislocations in the crystal will be electrically charged and surrounded by a Debye-Huckel cloud of vacancies. If the vacancy cloud is immobile a finite force is required to separate the dislocation from the cloud ...

Muscle Contraction: the Effect of Ionic Strength

Nature, 1968
CONTRACTILE responses are depressed and may be abolished in muscles that are shrunken by exposure to hyperosmotic media; they are enhanced when the muscles are swollen in hyposmotic media1–4. The effects of hyperosmotic solutions have been ascribed5 to “dissociation of electromechanical coupling”, but earlier work4,6 had shown that the processes of ...

The effect of the ionic strength on G-bands

Human Genetics, 1975
The most important factors, for direct demonstration of G-bands, are the ionic strength and the dye concentration of the staining solution. Sorensen buffer, ionic strength 0.10 and 0.50 vol% Giemsa produce G-banding of human metaphase chromosomes.

Responsive Polyelectrolyte Multilayers Assembled at High Ionic Strength with an Unusual Collapse at Low Ionic Strength

Macromolecular Rapid Communications, 2012
AbstractResponsive polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) of poly(diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) and poly(styrene sodium sulfonate) (PSS) with thicknesses between 350 and 400 nm for 11 deposited polyelectrolyte layers were fabricated assembling the polyelectrolytes at 3 M NaCl.

Sensing Ionic Strength

Science's STKE, 2006
Bacteria, which may be exposed to widely varying osmotic conditions, respond to hyperosmotic stress by accumulating solutes. For instance, the ABC (ATP-binding cassette) transporter OpuA of Lactococcus lactis takes up glycine betaine to combat water loss and cell shrinkage.

THE STRENGTH OF IONIC SOLIDS

1960
Abstract : THE STRENGTH OF IONIC SOLIDS IS DISCUSSED IN TERMS OF THEIR RESISTANCE TO FRACTURE. PARTICULAR EMPHASIS IS GIVEN TO THEIR EXTRAORDINARY NOTCH SENSITIVITY. IONIC SINGLE CRYSTALS CAN EXHIBIT CONSIDERABLE DUCTILITY BEFORE FRACTURE PROVIDING THE STRAIN IS LOW ENOUGH AND THE TEMPERATURE HIGH ENOUGH.
