Adverse effects of ionizing radiation on normal tissues limit the radiation dose in cancer treatment, thereby compromising treatment efficiency. Among the consistently affected non-cancer cells, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) exhibit high ...

The impact of ionizing radiation on the formation of a supermassive star in the early Universe [PDF]
A massive primordial halo near an intensely star-forming galaxy may collapse into a supermassive star (SMS) and leave a massive black hole seed of about $10^5~M_{\odot}$. To investigate the impact of ionizing radiation on the formation of an SMS from a nearby galaxy, we perform three-dimensional radiation hydrodynamical simulations by selecting a pair ...

Filament based Ionizing Radiation Sensing Technology [PDF]
Accidental exposure to overdose ionizing radiation will inevitably lead to severe biological damage, thus detecting and localizing radiation is essential. Traditional measurement techniques are generally restricted to the limited detection range of few centimeters, posing a great risk to operators.

Social context prevents heat hormetic effects against mutagens during fish development
This study shows that sublethal heat stress protects fish embryos against ultraviolet radiation, a concept known as ‘hormesis’. However, chemical stress transmission between fish embryos negates this protective effect. By providing evidence for the mechanistic molecular basis of heat stress hormesis and interindividual stress communication, this study ...

Role of Ionizing Radiation in Neurodegenerative Diseases
Ionizing radiation (IR) from terrestrial sources is continually an unprotected peril to human beings. However, the medical radiation and global radiation background are main contributors to human exposure and causes of radiation sickness.

Comment on "Stress induction in the bacteria Shewanella oneidensis and Deinococcus radiodurans in response to below-background ionizing radiation", Castillo, et al. Int. J. Rad. Biol., 2015; Early Online DOI:10.3109/09553002.2015.1062571 [PDF]
Castillo, et al. report hormesis by background levels of radiation, at which there is $< 10^{-3}$ ionization per bacterium in a replication time. This suggests radiation products accumulate in the growth medium over much longer times. Experiments are proposed to test this hypothesis.

Radioprotective agents to prevent cellular damage due to ionizing radiation
Medical imaging has become a central component of patient care to ensure early and accurate diagnosis. Unfortunately, many imaging modalities use ionizing radiation to generate images.

High‐grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) is the most common and aggressive type of ovarian cancer with urgent need for new treatment strategies. This study evaluates plasma‐activated media (PAM) as a novel treatment for HGSOC, showing its ability to selectively induce oxidative stress and apoptosis in HGSOC cell lines, patient ascites cells and primary
