Extraction of ionosphere parameters in ionograms using deep learning [PDF]

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences, 2019
Based on a new developed author’s method for recognition traces of reflections from different layers of the ionosphere in ionograms, the ionosphere parameters are extracted. The method is based on the use of deep neural networks (DNN).

First Observation of Localized F Region Bottom‐Type Scattering Layer by All‐Sky Radar at Low Latitude

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 23, 16 December 2025.
Abstract F‐region bottom‐type scattering layers (BSLs) occurring over equatorial and low latitudes may act as the precursor of plasma bubbles, usually observed by narrow‐beam very high frequency radars. However, their spatial features remain unknown due to the radar narrow field‐of‐view.

Automatic interpretation of oblique sounding ionograms based on hybrid algorithms

open access: yesSolar-Terrestrial Physics
The paper presents a method of interpreting data on oblique ionosphere sounding (OS) with a continuous chirp signal. Hybrid algorithms for automatic interpretation of ionograms by selected points with significant amplitude obtained during secondary data ...

A Personal Voyage Among Earth and Space Physics Disciplines

open access: yesPerspectives of Earth and Space Scientists, Volume 6, Issue 1, December 2025.
Abstract I have organized my thoughts in an autobiographical way in relation to the several distinct phases of my career encompassing Earth and space physics. I discuss atmospheric and space physics topics of interest to me in an international context, and I emphasize the value of community activities and international conferences for the interchange ...

Ingestion of GNSS‐Derived‐TEC Into NeQuick 2 Model Over South America

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 23, Issue 12, December 2025.
Abstract This study examines the ingestion of total electron content (TEC) data from a network of ground‐based Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers into the NeQuick 2 model, providing a benchmark for evaluating the cost‐effectiveness of GNSS data ingestion for near‐real‐time ionospheric specification. A significant reduction in root mean

Simultaneous Observations of Quasi‐Orthogonal Nighttime MSTIDs at Conjugate African‐European Midlatitude Stations on 4 October 2018

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 130, Issue 12, December 2025.
Abstract Two quasi‐orthogonal nighttime medium‐scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) were observed by conjugate midlatitude all‐sky imagers in Sutherland (32.4° ${}^{\circ}$S, 20.8° ${}^{\circ}$E; magnetic latitude: ∼ ${\sim} $−40.9° ${}^{\circ}$) and Asiago (45.87° ${}^{\circ}$N, 11.53° ${}^{\circ}$E; magnetic latitude: ∼40.3° ${\sim} 40.3{

Evaluation of automatic ionogram scaling for use in real-time ionospheric density profile specification: Dourbes DGS-256/ARTIST-4 performance

open access: yes, 2012
Statistical evaluation of the Dourbes (4.6˚E, 50.1˚N) digisonde automatic scaling of the more frequently used ionospheric parameters (foF2, foF1, foE, h’F2, h’F, h’E, and M3000F2) was performed using automatically and manually scaled data from the time ...

Classification of Ionograms Obtained from Vertical Incidence Pulsed Ionospheric Radar (VIPIR)/Dynasonde Ionospheric Radar at Jang Bogo Station, Antarctica

open access: yesJournal of Astronomy and Space Sciences
The electron density profiles produced from the ionospheric sounding system are traditionally estimated by the inversion procedure based on the image analysis of the observed ionograms. Jang Bogo Vertical Incidence Pulsed Ionospheric Radar (VIPIR) with
