Automatic Real‐Time Ionogram Scaling Method for Global Ionosondes Using Artificial Intelligence

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract An ionosonde is an instrument used for local ionosphere remote sensing observations and has the longest history and widest global distribution. Ionograms observed by ionosondes, which depict the electron density profile as a function of virtual height, are critical for ionospheric modeling accuracy and space weather nowcasting.

Ionogram inversion for a tilted ionosphere

open access: yes, 1990
Digital ionosondes such as the Dynasonde disclose that the ionosphere is seldom horizontal even when it is plane stratified to a good approximation. The local magnetic dip does not then determine correctly the radiowave propagation angle for inversion of

Trace Extraction and Repair of the F Layer from Pictorial Ionograms

open access: yesAtmosphere
Publicly available ionograms are often in the form of pictures. This paper proposes a novel algorithm for extracting and repairing the F layer traces from pictorial ionograms.

Features of backscatter ionospheric sounding as studied with a chirp ionosonde

open access: yesSolar-Terrestrial Physics, 2017
We present the results of the studies of backscatter ionospheric sounding (BS) on the basis of a multipurpose chirp ionosonde developed in ISTP SB RAS. We analyze BS experimental data obtained during different seasons from 2005 to 2009.

Long‐Term Trends of Ionospheric Peak Electron Density and Height

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Long‐term trends in ionospheric electron density have been investigated using vertical sounding data from 14 ionosonde stations spanning European, Asian, and American longitude sectors. The study examines the relationship between the ionospheric F2 layer peak electron density (NmF2) and height (hmF2) at noontime and midnight with the solar 30 ...

Can the International Reference Ionosphere Model Predict Long‐Term Trends in the Ionosphere?

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 8, 28 April 2026.
Abstract The International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) model can partially reproduce ionospheric long‐term trends (LTTs), although not intentionally, provided that an appropriate effective ionospheric index is used. We evaluate how model predictions driven by a solar activity proxy (R12) and by an effective ionospheric proxy (IG12) can reproduce the ...

Relatively Intense Daytime GNSS Amplitude Scintillations at Middle Latitude Linked With Multi‐Layered Strong Es Structures

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 8, 28 April 2026.
Abstract Intense Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) amplitude scintillations usually occur in nighttime at low latitudes due to ionospheric plasma bubble irregularities. During daytime at middle latitudes, previous studies found that the sporadic E (Es) layer could lead to GNSS amplitude scintillations, which however, is relatively weak, for ...

Dataset of Quiet Space Weather Periods for Ionospheric Studies

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 13, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract The ionosphere is a dynamic environment regularly affected from above and from below. This study identifies periods within the years 2000–2023 when the impact from above, driven by space weather, was minimal. The quiet space weather periods have wide usage for two types of ionospheric studies. At first, studies of isolated space weather events

Oblique Ionograms Automatic Scaling Algorithm OIASA application to the ionograms recorded by Ebro observatory ionosonde [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Space Weather and Space Climate, 2018
The oblique ionograms automatic scaling algorithm (OIASA), developed at the INGV for the identification of trace of oblique ionograms, allows the determination of the maximum usable frequency (MUF) for communication between the transmitter and receiver, automatically rejecting poor quality ionograms.

A Computationally Efficient Method for Deriving Instantaneous F2 Layer Peak Parameters From Climatological Maps and TEC Observations

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) and the Ionosphere‐Plasmasphere (IRI‐Plas) models describe monthly median ionospheric conditions. IRI‐Plas, unlike IRI, allows one to include instantaneous Total Electron Content observations (TEC) to adjust the median predictions. The standard IRI‐Plas generates monthly medians of foF2m, hmF2m and TECm
