The Crozet Natural Iron Bloom and Export Experiment (CROZEX)

open access: yesDeep-Sea Research Part II: Topical Studies in Oceanography, 2007
This special issue describes the findings of the first planned natural iron fertilisation experiment in the Southern Ocean, the CROZet natural iron bloom and EXport experiment (CROZEX), which took place from November 2004 to January 2005. The bloom that occurs annually north of the Crozet Islands and Plateau (Crozet) was surveyed and compared with a ...

Importance of stirring in the development of an iron-fertilized phytoplankton bloom

Nature, 2000
The growth of populations is known to be influenced by dispersal, which has often been described as purely diffusive. In the open ocean, however, the tendrils and filaments of phytoplankton populations provide evidence for dispersal by stirring. Despite the apparent importance of horizontal stirring for plankton ecology, this process remains poorly ...

Cyanobacterial blooms, iron, and environmental pollutants

BioMetals, 2023
Iron determines the abundance and diversity of life and controls primary production in numerous aqueous environments. Over the past decades, the availability of this metal in natural waters has decreased. Iron deficiency can apply a selective pressure on microbial aquatic communities. Each aquatic organism has their individual requirements for iron and

The decline and fate of an iron-induced subarctic phytoplankton bloom

Nature, 2004
Iron supply has a key role in stimulating phytoplankton blooms in high-nitrate low-chlorophyll oceanic waters. However, the fate of the carbon fixed by these blooms, and how efficiently it is exported into the ocean's interior, remains largely unknown. Here we report on the decline and fate of an iron-stimulated diatom bloom in the Gulf of Alaska.

Response of macroinvertebrates to blooms of iron-depositing bacteria

Hydrobiologia, 1994
In field measurements and laboratory experiments we assessed the influence of high levels of iron, manganese, and concurrent blooms of iron-depositing bacteria, Leptothrix ochracea, on macroinvertebrates. Macroinvertebrate communities in five of six streams were depauerate inside blooms.
