Phytoplankton bloom on iron rations
Nature, 1996An iron-enrichment experiment in the equatorial Pacific Ocean shows that increased availability of this trace nutrient induces dramatic biological and biogeochemical changes in the surface waters.

Distribution and Precipitation Mechanism of TiN in Industrial Pure Iron Bloom
steel research international, 2022The size and distribution of TiN particles have a great influence on the properties of industrial pure iron. It is necessary to understand TiN precipitation behavior in bloom. Herein, inclusions in industrial pure iron cast billets are observed. The temperatures and conditions for TiN precipitation are calculated using thermodynamics and kinetics.

Physicochemical speciation of iron during coastal algal blooms
Marine Chemistry, 2002Abstract Previous coastal marine studies have concluded that the total dissolved Fe may influence the initiation of algal blooms, including Brown Tides of Aureococcus anophagefferens. However, the existence of unavailable colloidal and organically complexed Fe make the dissolved pool a poor indicator of what is bioavailable for assimilation by ...

Iron uptake and toxin synthesis in the bloom‐forming Microcystis aeruginosa under iron limitation
Environmental Microbiology, 2011Summary Toxin production during cyanobacterial blooms poses a significant public health threat in water bodies globally and requires the development of effective bloom management strategies. Previously, synthesis of the hepatotoxin microcystin has been proposed to be regulated by iron availability, but the ...

Ferritin is used for iron storage in bloom-forming marine pennate diatoms
Nature, 2008Primary productivity in 30-40% of the world's oceans is limited by availability of the micronutrient iron. Regions with chronically low iron concentrations are sporadically pulsed with new iron inputs by way of dust or lateral advection from continental margins.

A mesoscale phytoplankton bloom in the polar Southern Ocean stimulated by iron fertilization
Nature, 2000Changes in iron supply to oceanic plankton are thought to have a significant effect on concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide by altering rates of carbon sequestration, a theory known as the 'iron hypothesis'. For this reason, it is important to understand the response of pelagic biota to increased iron supply.

Deep carbon export from a Southern Ocean iron-fertilized diatom bloom
Nature, 2012Fertilization of the ocean by adding iron compounds has induced diatom-dominated phytoplankton blooms accompanied by considerable carbon dioxide drawdown in the ocean surface layer. However, because the fate of bloom biomass could not be adequately resolved in these experiments, the timescales of carbon sequestration from the atmosphere are uncertain ...

Iron-Stimulated Phytoplankton Blooms in the Southern Ocean: a Brief Review
Remote Sensing in Earth Systems Sciences, 2019Nine iron fertilization experiments have been carried out in the Southern Ocean (SO) so far comprising of seven artificial fertilization and two naturally enriched events. The first artificial iron addition, SOIREE, was conducted south of the polar front in February 1999 followed by six more experiments (EisenEx, SOFeX-N, SOFeX-S, EIFEX, SOLAS-SAGE ...
