Kidney iron deposition by R2* is associated with haemolysis and urinary iron

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, 2019
SummaryKidney iron deposition measured by R2* (magnetic resonance imaging) MRI is posited to result from tubular reabsorption of filtered haemoglobin due to intravascular haemolysis. In chronically transfused sickle cell disease (SCD), R2* is elevated and positively correlated with lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). To account for contributions to renal iron

Microstructure‑Dependent Phase Transformations Under High‑Pressure Laser Heating in Additively Manufactured AlCrFe2Ni2

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additively manufactured AlCrFe2Ni2 with contrasting BCC/B2‐dominant and lamellar FCC + BCC/B2 microstructures exhibits the same pressure‐induced BCC/B2 → HCP transformation. Under laser heating at high pressure, HCP is destabilized, and a cubic BCC/B2 + FCC assemblage is recovered, while the lower‐scan‐speed microstructure transforms at a lower ...

Influence of Fe Particle Size Distribution on Chemical Homogeneity, Microstructure, and Crack Formation in Fe–SiC Powder Blends Processed by PBF‐LB/M

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The influence of Fe particle size on in situ alloying of Fe–SiC powder blends in PBF‐LB/M is revealed. Contrary to expectations, the coarser Fe fraction provides a broader crack‐free processing window and slightly improved elemental homogeneity while producing higher but more variable hardness. The results highlight a complex trade‐off between particle

Effect of Calendering and Surface Treatment on the Thermochromic Response of Cholesteric Liquid Crystals on PET Nonwovens

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study explores the influences of calendering and surface treatment during direct ink writing (DIW) of thermochromic cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) on PET nonwovens. For the PVA‐coated nonwovens, calendering reduces pore size leading to reduced ink absorption and enhanced spreading. The NeverWet‐coated nonwovens improve thermochromic responses by

The Abundance and Behavior of Viruses in Ancient Seawater and Modern Iron-rich Environments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The proclivity of silica for ferric hydroxide sorption sites allows for an Archean iron cycle involving iron-silica co-precipitation and deposition of banded iron formations (BIF).

Laser‐Induced Graphene from Waste Almond Shells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Almond shells, an abundant agricultural by‐product, are repurposed to create a fully bioderived almond shell/chitosan composite (ASC) degradable in soil. ASC is converted into laser‐induced graphene (LIG) by laser scribing and proposed as a substrate for transient electronics.

Electrospun Wood‐Derived Biopolymers as Electrodes in Electrochemical Energy Storage Technologies

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Electrospinning transforms wood‐derived cellulose and lignin into architecturally defined, binder‐free carbon electrodes with tuneable porosity and functionality. This review shows how fibre design enables decoupled charge and mass transport, enhancing performance across battery systems, while identifying key challenges in spinnability, scalability ...

In newly diagnosed diabetes, hyperglycemia is associated with increased brain iron deposition, measured by MRI-based Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping (QSM)

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Research
Background: Long-term Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) affects multiple organs and systems throughout the body, including the cardiovascular, renal, and nervous systems. In the brain, T2DM impacts brain function, leading to cognitive impairment.
